It's an interesting concept, but it really needed another pass or two before production.

A lot of Hasbro-only products suffer in the engineering, and it seems like a lot of Takara-only products suffer in the aesthetics/playability categories (not always, but when left completely to their own devices, some Takara designs become very generic "anime robot" instead of feeling like Transformers or are very pretty but very fiddly/fragile).
The two halves working closely together always seems to create the best results.
I think it was a combination of engineering (not holding together right at the waist despite it occurring during the era of really solid well established engineering for just that sort of combination), the total incompatibility WITH those other combiners, and some really bizarre choices like giving Grimlock peg hole hands, but sized to not be able to hold anything available at the time.
The Energon Dinobots also originally weren't supposed to be released in the Energon line either. They were designed to be the first new molds made for the Universe line. Then someone decided to shove them in Energon instead because of how their Combiner gimmick was similar to (but notably not compatible with) the Energon combining gimmick.
Unfortunately they also came with the rest of Energon Grimlock.

I hope it's not a full boxed set (including Nexus). I'll have even less trust in Hasbro if they try to get us to double-dip on that character/mold. Far better to sell all the other parts and limb-bots without Nexus (either together or separately) or include a different (but still relevant) main (body) bot in a boxed set, IMO.

Odd thought, I wonder if Maximo will result in a run on those grey Starscream thrones BBTS got in, I know in the G2 comics it was purple, what little you could see, but I could see people wanting a spare for him and Starscream both, or at least a 'not the same' alternative.

Man, she twisted a giant screw right THROUGH his heart...no wonder he looks so annoyed...
It’s hilarious how they had to really try hard to consume the paint budget. Fake rubsign, crotch detail, even the heart’s something you’d expect to be sculpted but unpainted
