Nah, that's China. America is far from perfect but it's earned the status of a developed country.

Hey, if not for America we wouldn't have...um...let's see. Hugh Jackman is Australian. Well, there's Ryan Ren...no no. Canadian. Um...well, what about Ezra Miller? Can we claim...wait, would we really want to?

Well...shit!

As someone who has less than zero interest in any capeshit stuff, one of the most fascinating things to come out of the superhero boom is how you could go to literally any Walmart or Target and buy so much superhero shit: toys and action figures, the films on DVD or BD, T-shirts, random tie-in merchandise, etc.

And yet, you cannot actually buy any of the comic books in these stores.

Target used to sell some of the trade paperbacks. They always ended up on clearance because they didn't move.

Probably didn't help that they were always somewhere in the middle of some huge mega-super-crossover-bullshit event, but never the beginning or end of the event.

The Meijer (Midwestern box store chain in the vein of Walmart) near me sells bundled issues at like 3 comics for 10 bucks. No idea if those actually sell or not.

Ongoing comics tend to suck badly, not even getting into the continuity nonsense and constant giant events. Miniseries where there's a defined beginning, middle and end are where the good stuff is usually at.

Even the normies can sense the absolute level of dreck.

Manga and TMNT are the only comics I've found worth reading these days. BRZRKR was okay, but after 6 issues just didn't seem to be going anywhere, so I dropped it.

It helps that manga is incredibly diverse. Whether you’re into martial arts monkey-men, ninja, pirates, sports, magical girls, robots, rom-coms, yuri,BL or straight up porn, you’re gonna find something.

comics are basically just capeshit and stuff that is sort of popular but not popular enough to get a show or a movie.

I was trying to keep up with the rebooted Transformers comics, but none of the local book stores carry the trades and I never remember to actually get them online, so I'm a couple of books behind now.

Don't suppose you could suggest a decent robot cat-ninja yuri porn with pirates?

I think another thing that helps with manga, at least for me, is that the price per volume has been remarkably consistent for years.

Like it's been 20 years since Tokyopop came up with what we know think of as the 'standard' pricing for a manga volume of $9.99 (at least in the US, IDK about other countries obviously) and that's still the general price range for a regular-ass volume of manga, around $10.

Well to be fair, comic prices may be raising like crazy, but at least the quality is nose-diving to match.

My nearest local comic shop is 20+ miles away. He's a nice guy, and I try to support him, but he doesn't do pulls. He'll order stuff in, but it goes on his shelves or in stacks, and it's just a matter of chance if I get it or not.

The next nearest local comic shop that does pulls is about 55-60 miles away, and they quit doing comics last month to focus on gaming. There is another shop near them, but every time I've dealt with that guy, he comes across as a real ass-hat.

I only collect Transformers, GI Joe, Godzilla, Firefly, Ultraman, and Atomic Robo (when it's printed), so not really any capes, but they also aren't titles carried at the average comic shop. Seems like the comic industry is it's own worst enemy.

I feel lucky that my local comic shop is only about 9 miles away and is a pretty large shop that carries the stuff I'm into (manga, Japanese shit, and toys) in addition to Western comics.

Also it's pretty near a store that just sells anime and other Japanese goods too. That store's expanded a bit since I last went there. It used to just be one pretty small shop in the corner of the shopping center but now it's got a larger space two stores down. (I think the smaller space is still opened too but I didn't check last time I was there cuz I found what I was looking for in the larger space).
