From the statistics... another aging democrat that probably shouldn't be seeking re-election.

OR; you can scream at your reps and the DNC to push more progressive and younger candidates. Cause that seems to be working right now.

It's probably worth remembering that this is, specifically, the district in which San Francisco exists. They're far more likely to push for "more progressive and younger" than other parts of the country, even. Especially now that the long-time incumbent isn't a factor.

The important thing is that younger and more progressive people actually run. Trouble is, these days young and politically motivated people tend to keep their politicking to social media where it can be of maximum uselessness.

For context, they went from 51-48 in the House of Delegates to 64-36. It's being reported as a "supermajority" despite being less than two thirds, so maybe they measure that differently than Congress. Democrats already hold a slight majority in the state Senate, and their current governor is a Republican who narrowly edged out a former (but not sitting) governor in 2021. (Virginia does not allow governors to serve multiple consecutive terms, but does allow for nonconsecutive ones. I'd never heard of that before, and I'm intrigued.)

A super majority in a voting body is usually defined as "opposition can vote unilaterally and still not overturn majority vote".

Perhaps the threshold for that is 60 in Virginia? Kind of like how you need 60 (not two-thirds) to bypass a filibuster in the US Senate

Don't look at me. I just live here and I'm not sure what constitutes a supermajority in our legislature.

But for context about Tuesday's win that should be very very very worrying to the GOP is that there were a lot of red strongholds, places that have been reliably red for decades, went blue here. Like Spotsylvania went for Trump last year by +18. Spanberger turned it around +2. That's an amazing turn around for just a year removed from the Presidential election.

This was a REALLY good political move, though. IF the Republicans had accepted this deal, the ACA subsidies would be funded for a year. Which is good for actual people who actually need help. Then next year, at Midterms this would all be on the table again and fresh in voters minds

If the Republicans didn't accept, which is what happened (They rejected it almost immediately), then nothing changes but the dialogue now demonstrates that Republicans FULLY own this shut down because they're refusing ANY negotiation.

So in summary, this currently changed literally nothing. Nothing was lost, nothing was snatched away. The situation today is identical to yesterday only the Republicans look worse.

I do not like that I'm having to defend Schumer here, I don't like Schumer, but this was not bad politics. It's some of the only smart politics he's used in a while.

At this point, keeping the shutdown going indefinitely just to hurt the maximum number of needy people as possible probably is the Republcians' actual goal, so you could offer them anything and they'd still say no. You could probably offer a full concession to whatever the hell their demands were in the first place and they'd still say no, after getting over their initial shock.

I guess the question is, whose votes are more valuable: People who normally support Republicans but could turn on them if they realize what's really going on here... or people who would take the concession offer seriously and use it as an excuse to turn their backs on the Democrats yet again.

This is why they're getting blamed even though it is true that they're the ones who keep voting to reopen the government. We all know the administration has been wanting some fight or another to trigger a shutdown so they can initiate those RIFs they've been dreaming about since term 1. It's why they're not jumping on the chance to say "Look! The radical left Democrats shut down the government but we got you your SNAP anyway after a so-called judge said so. You can count on us." They don't want to fund it even if they could try to take credit for funding it. Not funding it is the point. They've been wanting this to happen.
