Huh. It's taken me this long to focus on it, but I'm not super into that head sculpt. Missing the wide squatness of the original.
Really, the fact that his head isn't so wide and squat is why I think this one looks so much better.

Importing the original back in 2001 was still one of my most exciting early moments of adult collecting for me. Everything about this Galvatron makes all my nostalgia tingle. I am happy with everything I've seen so far.

I remember finding the original, still sealed in box, in a comic store in Salem, MA for $25 back in the day. It felt surreal to see an imported toy in person without a big markup. I still have him around here somewhere, but I don't know if I'll ever dare to transform him again.

I saw the transformation video for the new one. Not sure if it makes sense, but I'm very impressed by the simplicity of it? A lot of modern transformers that I or my nephew have gotten have on occasion had such odd non-intuitive 'partial moves' and such that I've started making sure my sister has Emgo's Just Transform It links in case I'm not there when something gets messed up. This one seems to have very few places anyone could get stuck... I'm tempted to grab one now even though its not the color I preferred (and I'm sure that they will recolor it later, just like they did with Rodiumus and Predaking already).

It's basically identical to the original toy's transformation.

Aside from some extra joints (swivels in the wings, the dragon arms are on ball joints instead of swivels, having actual feet), it looks pretty much the same as the original. Which is perfectly fine by me, no need to change what already worked.

That's the thing. And the only issue the original had was gold plastic and that annoyingly thin waist peg. I assume this one will not have nearly as thin of a tiny rivet holding the halves together.

Was the original's gold plastic an issue? I know a lot of people tend to assume gold plastic is automatically problematic, but it really wasn't even back in that era. I can't find any references to Galvatron on the wiki's GPS page, and I don't see any references to any GPS issues on Galvatron's page. It's been a while since I had mine out, but I don't recall any of his gold plastic feeling fragile or brittle. If anything, I think I recall yanking his gold drill halves around pretty forcefully to maneuver them.

The only issue of any sort I had with mine was that Takara left several screws loose. I had to tighten those myself.

I don't know if the gold ever became an issue or not, honestly. I'm just rather paranoid of it due to how many of my older bots started cracking, way before I ever heard of GPS. I was one of those people who would keep trying to fix things over and over, and not realize why the breaks kept happening. I didn't know about the material issues till years later.

Mine's the Korean one so I dunno if their plastics differed from those of Japan.

Hokay! So, the next chapter of the New Legends manga just dropped and is officially retconning the Japanese dub of EarthSpark as being an alternate divergent timeline to JG1 that split off from the main timeline right before the first episode of the G1 cartoon, four million years in the past.

Basically, Alpha Trion hears about Optimus Prime's plan to leave Cybertron aboard the Ark and travel the stars in search of new energy resources, and that Elita One won't be able to go with him because, according to Optimus, it's too dangerous for her to come along (which we saw in a flashback in the G1 episode "The Search for Alpha Trion"). Alpha Trion then reads from the book of prophecies, the Covenant of Primus, to see what the future will look like if Optimus embarks on this trip to the stars; the Covenant foretells that Optimus will not return to Cybertron for another four million years.

Wishing to create a future where Optimus and Elita can remain together for all time, Alpha Trion uses the Quill to write in the Covenant of Primus and create an alternate future timeline where Optimus and the Autobots do not leave Cybertron aboard the Ark, instead remaining on Cybertron and toughing it out through the war for the next four million years. After which, the war finally shifts to Earth with neither the launch of the Ark and Nemesis nor the four-million-year slumber of the Autobots and Decepticons inside the Ark. This is meant to line up with how the war's events were told in the EarthSpark cartoon.

Once the war comes to Earth, the events of EarthSpark's version of the war plays out, with humans getting involved, Megatron reforming and siding with the Autobots, and then the show's present-day events play out. But during the time that passed before the war came to Earth, the language of this divergent splinter timeline deviated from that of the main timeline, meaning Convoy became known as "Optimus Prime", Cybertrons became knowns as "Autobots", Destrons became known as "Decepticons", and so on.

But of course, all this is just a splinter timeline while the original timeline of the G1 cartoon and its many, many Japanese sequels and spinoffs remains unaltered. Japanese EarthSpark is now a timeline split because Alpha Trion wanted to write some OptimusXElita fanfiction. 😛

Meanwhile, the original English-language version of EarthSpark remains its own non-G1 continuity, basically like another "Car Robots vs. Robots in Disguise" situation, or "Galaxy Force vs. Cybertron".

As always, the Covenant of Primus is still such a weirdly-defined kinda-OP (lol) scam. It's a book of prophecies... that I only read once they're plot-relevant! It's a book of prophecies... that I write!
