Sonic The Hedgehog

Scratch and Grounder were also the primary badniks (and punching bags!) in the adventures of sonic the hedgehog cartoon. Which you can watch on tubi for free.

It's uh... very cartoony, like looney tunes kinda stuff: so if you were a fan of SaTam; the tone, story and animation are completely different. Fun in its own way, but very, very "late 80's early 90's saturday morning cartoon" if you know what I mean here.

I just watched Lowart's vid last night. I really appreciate his perspective on the whole thing and isn't judging it by looking back on it with 30 years of Sonic lore clouding his judgement.

Where he left off they were just starting to incorporate Sonic Adventure.

Oh I just meant if we were rattling off media-only characters.
The conversation was about how to introduce/incorporate Sally and her Freedom Fighters into the games.

Pretty sure everyone here knows all that.

They weren't a part of the Freedom Fighters. They made a few appearances in the early days as comedy relief badniks. But, their most prominent appearances would probably be when they ended up as bouncers for Mammoth Mogul's casino...and then later bouncers for Breezie's casino (Mammoth Mogul got erased from the comic after the lawsuits/Super Genesis Wave.)

If you want a summary for the first 77 or so issues of the Archie comic, this guy's got you covered...if you've got a extra 3 hours to kill:

He seems to be planning on doing videos for ALL of Archie Sonic, hitting the high points. The next video, which covers Pender's tenure on the comic should be interesting. I'm not sure if he's going to cover the Knuckles comic in that video, it's own video, or just ignore it entirely.
Thanks for the link! Would be a fun listen. Can't wait for it to reach the Ian Flynn era.

I went down the Sonic YouTube black hole and saw some vids saying Ian Flynn's writing isn't that good for the franchise or something. Uh, what? Flynn has been an amazing storyteller. Is there really a negative camp out there?

---

Anyhow, read Scrapnik Island 4 issues. Bit of a throwaway story but amazing art by Jack Lawrence with incredible atmosphere building with the coloring and tone. Is the writer Barnes trying to make Mecha Sonic into a Metal Sonic? Having the robot have a voice is... odd. But he's trying something sorta different anyway. Mecha Knuckles being preset to protect the fallen carrier is funny and dangerous at the same time.

If Flynn is fine with this island of sentient and peaceful badniks, Belle the whatever puppet could just live there and they can start their own technocracy.

---

The 57th issue is... Ok. I expected Lanolin to have a preset game type gimmick but I don't see anything obvious yet.

Still not into Tangle and Whisper but Tangle is a huuuuuge oblivious idiot for suggesting the team name instead of coming up with something new.

Growing city, ok. No involvement from Eggman? Weird.

Saw a video rumor that IDW is losing Transformers and Sonic license. If Flynn is still onboard, he'll be reseting the universe again under a different publisher?

I kind of wonder how many videos this series will end up being with how LONG the first video was.

I COULD see issues 77-159 AND the Knuckles comic being combined all into one video. That way he gets all the pre-Ian comics done in one more video. Maybe the Knuckles comics will be split up into their own video...but plotlines in those comics DO end up flowing into the main book later on, anyway. ESPECIALLY during Penders' run.

Then how do you split up Ian's run? Is he going to cover all of Sonic Universe, too? That's...A LOT of comics. I'm tempted to say you should split Ian's Archie run into two videos at least. One Pre-Lawsuit/Reboot, and another Post. But, do the Mega Man crossovers deserve their own video? What about Sonic Boom? Do you need 3 videos just for Ian's run on the comic? The first up to around the lawsuit problems, a second talking about the Penders lawsuit and the crossover and the aftermath, and a final one about the final days of the Archie comic.

And then there's the curious case of the Sonic X comic. The LAST issue crosses over with the first issue of Universe. And El Gran Gordo DOES get referenced in the Off Panel strips in the back of the comics. But, it's probably THE most skippable of the Sonic comics. Do you even bother with Sonic X?

It'll be interesting to see just how far down this hedgehog-hole he goes.

Unfortunately, yeah, there is a section of the fandom that really doesn't like Ian. When you're on a book for over a decade, some people will always want something different. And there's even a few conspiracy theorists who think Ian has a stranglehold over the comic or something. Some even go so far as to think that he "made up" the Sega Mandates. I think the fans outnumber the naysayers, but there's always some people who just won't stop ranting about what they hate.

Saw a video rumor that IDW is losing Transformers and Sonic license. If Flynn is still onboard, he'll be reseting the universe again under a different publisher?

Well, IDW already lost the Transformers and GI Joe licenses. I don't THINK there's been anything concrete about them losing the Sonic license. But, IDW...has had it's problems over the years. And recently, it seems they're trying REALLY hard to have more of their own franchises instead of relying on licenses as much. But, I think anything else right now is just speculation. As far as I know right now, IDW still has the Sonic license for the foreseeable future.

BUT...if IDW DOES lose the license...there really isn't any reason a new publisher COULDN'T just pick up where IDW left off. If the comic doesn't end because of yet ANOTHER person suing Sega to get their characters again, I would think there wouldn't be any reason a new publisher couldn't just use the team they've created for this current comic. Legally, IDW was better off rebooting after Archie. But, there wouldn't be that same problem after IDW, theoretically.

But, that's if the publisher WANTS to do the same thing. Maybe a new publisher would want to focus on the Movie-verse, instead. Or would just have their own spin on the comic they'd want to try. It's hard to say.

But, I wouldn't worry too much right now. Probably. Hopefully. *SIGH*

Speaking of Sonic X, I just found out that Hulu now has both the 4Kids dub and the original Japanese version with subtitles available to watch.

Well, the biggest one (which might be what inspired all this) is Locke and Key. A story about a family living in a mysterious house full of magical keys. There's already a Netflix show (which already got cancelled). It's actually got shades of Vertigo influence in it. I recommend it.

IDW was also responsible for the somewhat popular Syfy channel TV show, Wynonna Earp.

Canto, which is a darker-fantasy take on the Wizard of Oz.

Starcadia Quest, which was a kid-focused sci-fi comic written by James Roberts. From what I understand it was mostly designed to advertise a tabletop game. It's not his best work, but a attempt was made, at least.

Bermuda, which is a comic about various people (and aliens) trapped in the Bermuda Triangle together.

I think there's been some talk about bringing back Zombies Vs Robots, their biggest comic from BEFORE they got the Transformers license. The same might be true of 30 Days of Night, a vampire story. I don't think it's happened yet, though.

And last year they green-lit 9 different original comics, all with the goal of spinning them off into TV shows and Movies.

Some of them are still running.

So, I think it's fair to say IDW is TRYING to do more original comics. They want to be more like Image, with TV show and movie licenses. There hasn't been a LOT of success, but a attempt is being made. It's possible they're taking the money they WOULD be spending on licenses and using that to hire different creatives to make movie pitches for them. I don't think that's QUITE worked out for them yet, though.

While waiting for that other Archie comic arcs review to reach the Flynn era, I listened to this guy, who did a review recap of Archie Sonic 160-197, which was when Flynn started.

Fairly new and looks to be doing the rest.

Sonic Universe is what I'm excited to relive. Those Flynn Yardley issues with epic 4 issue mini arcs were the best.

Oh, I remember Sonic X having a brilliant two parter where the Sonic X cast goes through the OG Sega Sonic game 1. I know that wasn't written by Flynn. Who did that one?

Watched through and found it interesting. Seems like the earliest comics had certain amount of fun before the drama increased. Though it seems that Sally as a character has a fair amount of baggage. Looking forward to the follow up videos.

Agreed. Those comics were the only time I ever remotely gave a crap about Silver the Hedgehog.
The visuals weren't anything new, just striped sleek bodysuits with visors, but I loved the Enerjak controlled minions firing lasers with their names!

VCT! CHRM! MGHT!

It was a good apocalyptic encounter for Silver in that other future continuity.

Yes, Joe Edkin! I remember thinking, wait, this is a great issue, what, it's not Flynn?! No way! Haha

Fun fact: That whole story arc is an homage to Ian Flynn's old fan comic: Other-M. A world where Robotnik never came to power, Knuckles became leader of the Dark Legion and they subjecated the wrold. And the Chaotix were his personal enforcers.
