Anti-Semitism

Several left leaning New York City Council members voted against or abstained on a resolution to establish an "End Jew Hatred Day" and a couple were willing to go on the record as to why.

That’s the exact same bullshit that the Corbynites/British far-left wheel out “Jews hate blacks”, “Jews invented racism, “Jews hate transgender people”, “Jews oppress Muslims”, etc, etc.

Barron's comments, sure, but I don't think that's what Hanif is saying.
I think she's saying that when right-wing people who are not Jewish themselves focus on opposing/condemning anti-semitism in particular, it's to disconnect it from the other forms of prejudice that they still support.

While that concept might occur elsewhere, in this particular case Hanif said she didn't want to support an initiative by right-wing Jews like Dov Hikind and Brooke Goldstein. She retweeted this:

Hikind is an embarrassing racist. And also, this was a poor choice for Hanif to for the first time reject a middle-of-the-road harmless feelgood gesture. Antisemitic violence in NY is skyrocketing and it is a terrible look for someone to "WELL ACTUALLY--" an excuse for it from certain perspectives or backgrounds. Signing onto feelgood gestures even with people you dislike is about 60% of politics. I'm sure Tom Tancredo and Dick Cheney were listed as cosponsoring some new memorial post office plaque a hundred times.

The bail reform issue is very relevant to local NY politics as there have been multiple cases of violent antisemitic attackers being released without bail and reoffending almost immediately, sometimes several times in a week.

The Republican sponsor of the Bill (Inna Verkinov) is a fan of speeding through school zones (23!? tickets for it since 2020) when she isn’t hosting rallies against COVID-19 vaccine mandates and supporting Donald Trump. To the point, Don Jr. did a robocall on her behalf.

Oh, and suggested people pull funding from the Museum of Jewish Heritage because they (rightfully!) didn’t want to host Ron DeSantis.

I can kinda see why some Democrats viewed her as not exactly on the up-and-up. Still, definitely better ways to handle that than going on the record as being against ending Jew hatred…

Hanif retweeted this thread that begins by arguing establishing an End Jew Hatred Day is the first step to criminalizing anti-Zionism then goes on to lament NYC being deeply entrenched with Israel, Governor Hochul attending a Celebrate Israel parade, the Nakba, AIPAC!!!, etc.

Maybe she doesn't care about Inna Verkinov's traffic tickets and it's something else. Probably the museum.

"We antizionist Jews are the majority," she says, "you just can't hear us!"

Then maybe you're not the majority, lol.

At the outside maximum, 10% of American Jews are antizionists. That's 10% of 2% of the population. They are allowed their beliefs, but tokenism is lousy politics. Meanwhile, about 35% of American women oppose Roe v Wade and want abortion to be illegal. That's 35% of 51% of the population. Social media props up one of those groups while basically disappearing the other.

In the States do you get oddball far-left people suddenly claiming to have Jewish heritage, in order to back up some claim that anti-Zionist Jews are the only ‘real’ Jews? Same people will also claim that they don’t know any Hebrew as anti-Zionist Jews don’t learn it, and also showing zero knowledge about Judaism (like literally not even anything they could’ve garnered through briefly glancing at Wikipedia or whatever).

It happens. Especially among brainwormed Millennials who realize in college that they have no identity of their own. Jews are the stars of the Bible, so in general people having mental crises and searching for a meaning that otherwise eludes them can often become unhealthily fixated on us. They can also claim it purely as cover for their loathing of mainstream normative Jewry. Or both!

New York State Senator Julia Salazar wholly manufactured a "Jewish" identity for herself, claiming all sorts of ancestors who other family members say never existed, and a family migration from British Palestine that likewise never happened. She went from being a fundie evangelical in Christians United For Israel to a socialist in "Jewish" Voice for "Peace" in about a year. She claimed to have had a conversion to Judaism in two months (which is impossible).

Then there's "I Have No Known Jewish Ancestors And Was Raised Evangelical But Decided I Was Jewish Without Conversion Because I Had A Fight With My Mom: The Nylah Burton Story"

Here are several high profile examples from Germany: https://m.jpost.com/international/h...ommunity-revealed-to-be-non-jewish-569895/amp

I personally have caught multiple "As-A-Jew"-s on Reddit who performatively bash Israel and mainstream Jewry and then when looking through their post history, surprise, they're Catholic (and then they delete). It's definitely a trend among the Extremely Online who want an alibi for being obsessed with supposed Jewish crimes and wickedness.

Not knowing Hebrew... that doesn't really mean anything, some people just weren't taught it, but acting like they are staying away from it on principle is freakishly fringe.

Attack on Africa's oldest synagogue leaves several dead and wounded

Link

An attack near a synagogue in Tunisia killed two security officers and two visitors on Tuesday the government said amid an annual pilgrimage to the island of Djerba that draws hundreds of Jews from Europe and Israel.

The attack was staged by a guard at a naval installation on Djerba who used his weapon to shoot a colleague and seize his ammunition before heading towards the synagogue, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

The attacker fired indiscriminately at security units located near the synagogue, killing the two visitors and another security officer, as well as injuring five security officers and four visitors. Security forces then shot him dead, the Interior Ministry said.

The Tunisian foreign ministry said one of the visitors killed was French and one was Tunisian.

Video posted on social media that Reuters was not immediately able to verify showed frightened looking people standing in a courtyard as a gunshot rang out. Residents of the island said they had heard an exchange of fire.

Authorities did not identify a motive for the attack but Islamist militants have previously targeted the pilgrimage in Djerba and have staged other attacks in the country.

The annual pilgrimage to Africa's oldest synagogue regularly draws hundreds of Jews from Europe and Israel to Djerba, a holiday destination off the coast of southern Tunisia, 500 km (300 miles) from the capital Tunis. The pilgrimage has had tight security since al Qaeda militants attacked the synagogue in 2002 with a truck bomb, killing 21 Western tourists.

Randi Nord, "antizionist-not-antisemitic" journalist for Mint Press News, Sputnik, and PressTV, arrested for painting swastikas on synagogues. She told police she was hoping people would blame Ukraine for it and support Putin's war against them.

“Royal Oak police told Chisholm at the hearing that the suspect was wearing an electronic tether as part of her bond in another felony criminal case when she vandalized the Woodward Avenue Shul.”

“Nord cut off her tether after spray painting the Woodward Avenue Shul in Royal Oak, Pelletier said”

“Police said the suspect was intelligent and cooperative when Royal Oak police interviewed her”

Maybe the latter, but most definitely not the former…

In 2021 during a flare up in Gaza, a group of pro-Palestinian protestors jumped a kippah wearing Jew in Times Square who was on his way to a pro-Israel rally. They viciously beat him, pepper sprayed him, called him a dirty Jew. One of the assailants later said he'd do it again if he could, according to prosecutors.

Instead of several years in prison, that assailant gets a generous plea deal.

A New York court has sentenced a pro-Palestinian activist to 18 months in jail for attacking a Jewish man two years ago.

Joey Borgen was attacked by Waseem Awawdeh and four assailants while walking to a pro-Israel rally in Manhattan in May 2021.

Borgen was called a "dirty Jew" before being punched, kicked, pepper-sprayed and beaten with crutches, causing numerous injuries, including a concussion.

He had been wearing his kippah.

Awawdeh pleaded guilty in April to attempted assault in the second degree as a hate crime and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree.

He received consecutive jail terms of 12 months for the assault charge and six months for the weapon charge.

Borgen delivered a victim impact statement at the sentencing of Waseem Awawdeh, 24, who was filmed beating Borgen with crutches, calling him a 'dirty Jew' and pepper spraying him.

According to the New York Post, Borgen told the court: "Why is he getting a break? I really can't fathom why he's getting a deal. Me, personally, I wanted to go to trial, I wanted to see full justice".

Awawdeh had faced up to seven years in prison, but Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office offered the 18 month sentence in exchange for his guilty plea.

Another of the attackers gets probation and anti-bias training.

Awawdeh said: "I have no problem doing it again" after his arrest, according to prosecutors, adding: "If I could do it again, I would do it again."

Another attacker in the case, Faisal Elezzi, pleaded guilty in April to attempted assault in the third degree as a hate crime.

He will serve three years of probation and go through mandatory anti-bias programming, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said.

This follows an 18 month sentence in March for another pro Palestinian activist involved in multiple other attacks.

A pro-Palestinian activist from Staten Island was sentenced to 18 months in prison on Friday for for attacking Jewish at protests regarding Israel

Saadah Masoud, 29, was sentenced at the Federal District Court in Manhattan to one count of conspiring to commit hate crimes.

In the spring of 2021 — amid a raucous public debate over conflict in Israel and Gaza, as well as a spike in antisemitic attacks — Masoud went to a pro-Israel rally in Manhattan. There, he asked a man wearing a Star of David necklace if he was Jewish, then punched him in the face. The man was walking with his wife, according to court papers.

Two weeks later, Masound alo shouted antisemitic insults at Heshy Tischler, an outspoken Orthodox activist in Brooklyn who had also railed against pandemic restrictions. After Tischler began filming, another associate of Masoud ultimately hit Tischler, who was running for City Council at the time.

Tischler addressed the court on Friday and called Masoud an “evil man” who showed up to “to see blood.”

And in 2022, Masoud was at a march hosted by the pro-Palestinian group Within Our Lifetime in Manhattan, where he assaulted a counterprotester, Matt Greenman, who had an Israeli flag draped over his body.

Masound threw Greenman to the ground, repeatedly punched him, dragged his face along the sidewalk, then ripped the Israeli flag from his neck, prosecutors said. At that same march, protestors called to ‘Globalize the Intifada’ and told the New York Jewish Week that they would not speak to the “Zionist Media.”

He's not antisemitic, though, just anti-Zionist.

Prosecutors asked for the 18-month sentence, but Masoud’s lawyers argued for six months, denying that the defendant was antisemitic, and saying that he only attacked people who were supporters of Israel, according to the New York Times.

These seem like insane slaps on the wrists versus the crimes, although off hand I'm not sure what the "average" if such a thing exists and can't find much with a quick Google search. Maybe this is in line with the crimes.

Noticed a cafe advertising a showing of the “Jews conspired against him” pseudo-documentary about Corbyn. Think I’ll give that place a miss. (Notice the parallels to Trump supporters believing that their hero is the blameless victim of a vast conspiracy?)
Edit: also notice that the title is a reference to Hitler's große Lüge?

Of all the people who deny the Holocaust, the small JEWISH segment of said group baffle me the most. Granted, it's Roseanne and she's getting more and more unhinged as time goes on.
