Honestly, I'm not very familiar with their cartoon models, having never watched more that a small bit of the cartoon. With that being true, I could see a lot of people being unhappy with a straight up repaint or slight remold. I wouldn't be one of those people, but I have to admit that I'm a pretty small demographic for Hasbro to try to appeal to.

Just for the record:

Like I can see Vortex being painted to match Ro-Tor and it not looking out of place. Brawl and Armorhide are almost the same, except the arms; so again I could see just a recolor working for him without much issue. But there's no way Swindle and Blastoff can look like Rollbar and Movor without completely new torsos, and a new head for Movor. Onsluaght is kinda 50/50 I could almost see a creative use of painting getting close, but he'd probably also need a new torso.

what if hastak goes crazy and they announce an RID ruination set and they refuse to show it off and even the packaging has no window and then the first person buys it and they just upscaled the g1 molds to be the same size as the new ones in order to be show accurate
I would only accept that if they used the version of the molds that had the die-cast parts instead of being all plastic.

Swindle looks great. A bit too lemon yellow for my tastes, as I always thought of him as either a sandier or a mustardy yellow but it’s not terrible.

might just keep this set in individual robots. I like the Combaticons and honestly if the Decepticons only had one combiner, I’d pick Bruticus but this set’s combiner mode really isn’t the slam dunk it needed to be considering the frame system, price hikes and two voyagers.

I think most of the G1 combiners could have used a bit of tweaking in terms of members. I like that Combiner Wars used Groove as a chest originally. Aboninus has two twin-headed beasties and Sinnertwin could have been something else more interesting. Predaking has two big cats members, and both leg members are actually herbavores. A couple of the Seacons are a little samey. There are other examples. Some combiners could have done more to have more cohesive colour layouts too.
This seemed to be the mentality early in CW. The Stunticons got a truck and the Arielbots got a helicopter to add variety to their teams while staying on theme. The Protectobots swapped Groove out with Rook to deal with the most egregiously out of scale member. The Combaticons kept their OG lineup, but the thematically dubious shuttle was swapped out for a Harrier jump jet, to make the overall theme more cohesive.

And fandom by and large didn't like it. Takara ended up doing their own versions of the classic forms/characters Hasbro omitted, and Hasbro eventually brought them all over via Gen Selects by the end of PotP. By the midpoint of Combiner Wars, Hasbro realized that what people wanted was faithful recreations of the original teams, not re-inventions. So the mandate to play it safe and not get too crazy was likely in place by the time the Terrorcons and Seacons came around.

Yeah, the prices are dragging on me too. But, oddly, I find the Combaticons, as “characters”, among the more interesting of the lot. Probably due to how much they got used in the cartoon. Not sure I’d get all five (unless Onslaught sees a good deal, which you never know), but I know Swindle and Blast off are top gets.

I don’t mind the brighter yellow on Swindle. With the purple, gives me that gaudy “used car salesman” vibe that fits the character so well.

If memory serves, there were plans for the US military to make use of the space shuttle at one point early on. Those plans ultimately fell through, likely because of cost.
There were indeed. The Air Force even refitted the launch complex at Vandenberg AFB in California for shuttle launches (which had originally been intended to be used for launching Titan rockets as part of the Manned Orbiting Laboratory actually an orbital spy platform program) because of the projected need to put military payloads into polar orbit, although in the wake of the Challenger disaster in 1986 and facing several other issues it was never used for such.

The price sucks, but if that's what it costs to keep the gimmick it's better than a sad Sideways that doesn't do anything.

...I'm actually a little disappointed Onslaught himself isn't more slavish to the cartoon colors-wise. Ditching the olive green on the sides of his arms is fine, but I really wish his fists and upper legs were still black (or dark grey) and not olive green.

Welp, just like Sideways got better pics, so did Onslaught: the pics on BBTS have different (better) colors, with the proper black legs and black fists. Which is the same as the box art, so hopefully that's the actual release colors.

Still sad I missed out on Slingshot.

Haven't gotten AotP version, either.

Hang on, this new (Armada) Sideways, the stock images show the Minicons combined with each other, but not as head modes for Sideways. And Sideways has a tampographed Autobot symbol. So presumably the AotP Rook and Crosswise don’t form alternative heads for Sideways?

The faction symbol changes from Autobot to Decepticon between the robot mode pic and the motorcycle mode pic. Pretty sure it is on a plate that you flip manually. Likewise, I think the Minicons can be attached in their respective head modes, there just don't seem to be any pics currently of that function? There's literally no point to including them if they don't form heads for Sideways; the Rider combined form isn't enough of a hook to be worth the engineering costs to achieve the same effect as an S7 ReAction+ Snake Eyes figure...
