What also doesn't help the silhouette, IMO, is the way that the arms stretch out Vortex and Blast Off, making them appear much longer than they should be. I know that it's out of necessity and part of the frame system, but it translates to the legs looking far too squat in comparison. Also, I look at the cartoon model for Onslaught's feet and then what the toy is doing, and sheesh...not good.

The thing is, it's better at being a more faithful G1 version of Bruticus than the CW/UW releases. However, I still have the UW version, and I'm having a hard time convincing myself that this is meaningfully better and worthy of a purchase.

I think that's definitely a consideration. Those fists end up a bit too close to the knees. I have to wonder, though, if it's also a casualty of Swindle and Brawl having to be 2/3 of their vehicle mode length in combined mode, due to the need for them to wad up and form boot-fronts.

It's a bit of a shame because Onslaught looks pretty good, and seems to use the budget pretty well.

Is that a tiny hinge in the middle of the shin (just below the knee), taking the place of an ankle rocker?

Yeah, I would also agree that Swindle and Brawl having to comprise that much mass, along with being "boots," is also a hindrance. I am still interested in seeing more pics of the combined mode (different angles, not holding a weapon, etc.). I feel like some of my own internal discord might - strong emphasis on that word - be alleviated, but I guess we'll see.

Just imagine how much of the proportions they'll have to alter for a Ruination retool if they want to stick to cartoon accuracy for him as well, since his cartoon models were way more slender like the toy:

Bruticus does look a bit goofy, but I think he'll go well with the rest of the post-PWT Generations 'cons, so he'll still be joining them on my shelf next year. Definitely makes it an even easier decision to stick with UW for any potential Ruination, though. I would still love to get a Battle Gaia, from either CW or AotP.

Looking forward to getting Sideways to join my Unicron team. The main thing that jumps out at me looking at his pics is that he looks like his head is just a block with Cannonball's face painted on it.

Still not in on the combiners, but flipping heck Sideways looks good. I was wondering if/how they were going to get his headmasters in, and they've done it even with needing to compromise. I do kinda wish they still had the thumbnail sliders to hide the head-mode eyes, but - again, compromises. Purple looks a little darker than the original to me, but purple with gold instead of the OG yellow is classy.

Seriously what happened here? All they had to do was what Superion and Menasor did but with reversed knees. Isn’t the point of the frame system a better combined mode? What exactly did the frame and bumping the legbots up a size class accomplish aside from placing the ankle tilts at the mid-shin?

Agreed.
But what I find funny is that, to Hasbro's credit, they're really sticking to those models and the people who think they want cartoon accuracy suddenly realize that's not what they want when the slavish to the model toys don't reflect their inaccurate memories they've been holding onto for decades.

It's like SS '86 Megatron. Everyone lost their minds over his grey shins, forgetting that's what he looked like in the 80s animation model sheet.

When most fans say they want Sunbow accuracy they don't actually mean that. They want something accurate to the inaccurate memories they've been holding in their mind's eye since the 80s. Obviously Hasbro and Takara's designers can't read minds, they're gonna hear a desire for Sunbow accuracy and reference the model sheets.
It's just been amusing to see how many people vocal about this stuff don't actually remember what those look like.

I donno, I think this works reasonably well.

What I remember, isn't the grey shins; it was the fact that in 90% of pictures they looked Blue-gray. And that color not being accurate to any form of animation.
That was a lighting thing. They could look flat grey or blue grey depending on who took the pictures and what their lighting setup was. But they looked grey when I had him in hand at Target. The one time I found him in the wild.

But I do definitely remember people asking why his shins were grey, period.

Yeah, a lighting thing which for awhile seemed like it was EVERY picture the colors were off, enough so that it was hard to tell which was the real color until in hand stuff started coming in. The blue being more common in most pictures put out for awhile is something I'd chalk up to a legit concern.

I don't remember people wondering about the gray being there at all, but I'm not going to doubt you on that.
