Quite the opposite. Basically the reaction (at least from North American Nihonophiles) was "our culture tells us that we should fall all over the blonde actress who sells soap infused with her bathwater and made a clothing ad with possible eugenicist overtones...but we think that the salarywoman making a silly face is more genuine and approachable!"

And many memes were launched.

Best of luck to her! (And we welcome her feedback on our posts, if she has time and is inclined to comment.)
Thanks for the explanation, but I'm still a little confused. Is it about the "unhaveable blonde western girl with large breasts" vs the "normal looking Japanese girl being goofy (and thus approachable)?"

Thanks for the comment about my gf. Unfortunately, she mucked-up her "front pose" and didn't qualify.

I think that's certainly part of the discourse, given that the whole "Sydney Sweeney's jeans/genes" wordplay flap was already a major English-speaking Internet topic at the time that Saori went viral. That being said, I think that the image just seemed to gather attention all on its own as well., in that "she's cute -- who is she?" fashion.

That's sad news. 😞 I suppose she will be practicing at home, though, so you'll be able to support her for future contests.

It's not a thing we'll know about, of course, unless you two decide to share. And that is how things should be. 🤫

In the meantime, Saori dropped a song and music video about her sudden fame and dealing with negative thoughts. Your lady friend may be cheered up by it, perhaps, there's a definite thread of perseverance there.

Usually, she only does that for my birthday.
*coughs politely*
Well, you've been more than generous, all things considered.

*Checks calendar*
Oh! looks as though we've hit the anniversary release of a game that really started to be a big deal in this thread, at about page 9 or so. (I'll wait for readers to review that page.) Has it been so long, truly?

Well, here's a cosplay skit that hasn't gone private, unlike that one from a while back. Some mild spoilers for the game, I guess, so....

Saori is going to America.

Seems... not a great time to do that, but let's wish her well and hope she comes back safe!

Well, what a long strange trip this bakery has had....

It started as showing off impractical fiction, and while there's still some of that here and there, we often get real discussions -- sometimes even without makeup!

Which leads us to Miley's latest friend meetup and drinking session at an izakaya with a unique drinks discount....

Almost 3 years ago now, back on page 11, tec wrote:

That pandora box is now open and the lid will never shut again so we must learn to adapt and evole as art enjoyers cos its not going away now
Well, it finally came to pass 3 years later, but not at my prompting. I just found it on PixAI, looking for something to start the spooky month off. But for AI creations, it seems most fitting. Timing's good too, considering a recent movie what came out.

That 3M trio from Japan is at it again. Miley, Minmiko and Mihel aren't prince-hunting this time, but they do find the most interesting bars.

(I saw Gattaca in the theater with my then girlfriend. Liked it, but it's been a long time since I saw it. May need to look it up and see how it works now.)

Well, I was going to set up some Halloween decorations in the bakery, as I've done for a few years now.
Normally, a certain AI shows up, but this time, there's a lady who's drinking tea and reading a book instead.

That should be fine.... shouldn't it?

What's "The Portrait of Markiplier", anyway?

Saori's vlog of her Los Angeles trip: which, as it turned out, was for business, if not her day job.

Readers (we have readers?) may recall the Miss Japan 2024 flap that led to the title becoming vacant. I recently came across an article that went into more depth on the subject, in which identity issues, the Japanese tabloid media, pay-to-judge schemes, incestuous corporate sponsorships, and attitudes about affairs all get examined.

Finally, a reason to like that song.

Two bideos before I get back to my holiday preparations!

First, one some Smiley Time with a reunion of her former idol duo:

And then one from Teacher Tanuki a.k.a. "Crazy Japanese" talking about how Japan embraced Christmas while putting its own twists on it.

There once was a time when I would have loved to spend the holidays someplace like this. But it's definitely different. How are you all preparing?

Anyone have any thoughts on Teacher Tanuki's presentation?

Closing 2025 -- a year of many changes overall and for this thread in particular -- is another music video from Saori.

Not sure what 2026 will bring, but finding myself being a content relay has been something else. Hopefully we had some good cultural learnings to go with our indulgences.

In the meantime, thank you for indulging my odd finds and fixed ideas.
