Quite the opposite. Basically the reaction (at least from North American Nihonophiles) was "our culture tells us that we should fall all over the blonde actress who sells soap infused with her bathwater and made a clothing ad with possible eugenicist overtones...but we think that the salarywoman making a silly face is more genuine and approachable!"

And many memes were launched.

Best of luck to her! (And we welcome her feedback on our posts, if she has time and is inclined to comment.)
Thanks for the explanation, but I'm still a little confused. Is it about the "unhaveable blonde western girl with large breasts" vs the "normal looking Japanese girl being goofy (and thus approachable)?"

Thanks for the comment about my gf. Unfortunately, she mucked-up her "front pose" and didn't qualify.

I think that's certainly part of the discourse, given that the whole "Sydney Sweeney's jeans/genes" wordplay flap was already a major English-speaking Internet topic at the time that Saori went viral. That being said, I think that the image just seemed to gather attention all on its own as well., in that "she's cute -- who is she?" fashion.

That's sad news. 😞 I suppose she will be practicing at home, though, so you'll be able to support her for future contests.

It's not a thing we'll know about, of course, unless you two decide to share. And that is how things should be. 🤫

In the meantime, Saori dropped a song and music video about her sudden fame and dealing with negative thoughts. Your lady friend may be cheered up by it, perhaps, there's a definite thread of perseverance there.
