Basically the reaction (at least from North American Nihonophiles) was "our culture tells us that we should fall all over the blonde actress who sells soap infused with her bathwater and made a clothing ad with possible eugenicist overtones...but we think that the salarywoman making a silly face is more genuine and approachable!"

I think that's certainly part of the discourse, given that the whole "Sydney Sweeney's jeans/genes" wordplay flap was already a major English-speaking Internet topic at the time that Saori went viral. That being said, I think that the image just seemed to gather attention all on its own as well., in that "she's cute -- who is she?" fashion.

In the meantime, Saori dropped a song and music video about her sudden fame and dealing with negative thoughts. Your lady friend may be cheered up by it, perhaps, there's a definite thread of perseverance there.
