Studio Series discussion

How many waves do you think it will take before Studio Series 84 gives us Earthrise Wheeljack again?

2 or 3 maybe, but you should ask when are they going to retire the Sideswipe mould, its had more uses than any seeker figure, though I'll grant that its the most basic action figures in TF, not overly complex and not to simple either

Yeah, if I counted right there were about twice as many classics seekers as there have been Sideswipe "clones," at least so far. But there's still time.

Using TF Wiki, for the original classics mould total of versions are: 31 and that includes the Coneheads as the changes have always been primary cosmetic with the torso, arms and legs being the same design

Siege seeker mould, number of uses: 13

Earthrise mould, number of uses: 18

Earthrise/siege Sideswipe mould: 16

Local walmart got their third restock of Shockwave / Skywarp, so I went ahead and grabbed Skywarp. Need to check some local stores and see if anybody has TC still taking up space and then hope I can get a Starscream. I didnt want to buy them, but damnit if they just dont look too nice to pass up on. Ill prob sell my Earthrise versions here soon.

I think the original intent behind studio series was for it to be based solely on the live action films and for those to come out every other year and have figures based upon films and then combined with characters from the previous movies but then the movies steady slowed down and they were running out of characters to make, thus they decided to bring in other studios to pad out the line by having sub lines, which is how 86 was birthed into existence along with Gamer, Last Knight wasn't well received as a movie and everything kind of came to a halt if it wasn't for the BB doing a sort of soft reboot but they had to fill out the line and not run out of movie characters! The overall problem remains to this day, there's just not enough characters in the live movies truly worth doing or their designs were so stupid that they can't make a toy of them or they barely had any screen time, for example Jolt from ROTF, he was barely in the movie! The slow down in the production of the number of movies coming out, had Hasbro having to come up with a way to pad out the line more as they ran out of the notable characters and the few characters who sort of did stuff yet weren't of true note!
They're so desperate to keep the line going as they're running out of characters....

And they STILL won't touch the twins (Mudflap and Skids).

I think a lot of the fuss over them is down to the media trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill as they do, personally, I never saw much of a problem with them aside from the fact they were just poorly written characters, but then ROTF wasn't exactly the best writing in the movies because of the writers strike back then and Paramount plus Hasbro with Bay idea of filming the movie without a completed script!

Evan has stated that they are willing to do the twins. It's just a matter of timing for when it would be best to make them.

He even specified that they are far more doable than a gun-moded Megatron.

That seems like an odd assurance to make. It's entirely true, but that kind of speaks to how weird the situation is to begin with.

They're bleh characters, but that's about it. I'm sure morons starved for something to make content out of would have a field day, but that's true of everything a company does in 2026, even actual good decisions.

Just make them and get it over with. New, less-overengineered takes would be nice. Then move on to the many other bots and concepts that haven't been made. Otherwise, just stop calling the line Studio anything and name your toylines like Apple phones. This one's the Geewun line, and this one's the Geewun Pro Max with other stuff from the 40 years.

It was a very online thing. They got a good response in my showing. People laughed.

I almost didn't bother seeing it in theaters because of how disastrously bad the reviews were, until a cashier at Target said it was good and I should see it.

Same. Saw it in a packed theatre, the twins got laughs.

It’s just nobody wanted to, y’know, buy them as toys :p

I really would not be surprised if, at least some, of the reluctance to touch upon those characters came down to prior (craptacular) sales, or issues with the vehicle mode licensing.

Were the Twins failures at retail? I remember RotF's line being very strong in terms of sales, surpassing the first movie line.
Obviously that doesn't mean there couldn't be duds... but I was in my early 20s when that movie came out. My disinterest in the Twins as toys probably isn't an indictment on whether or not kids at the time wanted them.

Even sales issues might not be down to the characters, at least not at first.

The ROTF ones were terrible toys, like many other overcomplicated toys in the line. That Leader class Optimus is one of the best of all time but it got plenty of online storefront reviews from disappointed parents that had trouble transforming the damn thing for their kids. It was a great showcase of toy engineering that could approximate the aesthetic and its complexity, but that doesn't make for a fun play experience.

The best Twins were the ice cream truck version, and that didn't stay on shelves long. Other than that, I feel like the Deluxe figures stayed on hooks longer than they should have, but don't have much evidence beyond memory to back that up. I, personally, didn't buy the individual Deluxes because I was focusing my collection more towards the Legend/Legion class at that time, and I did buy the Twins in that scale.

I wish I'd gotten the Takara EZ Collection release of the individual cars in the ice cream truck's colors. That's a bit of clever fun I didn't have room in the budget for at the time.

Skids's ROTF toys sold fine but both Mudflap and Tuner Mudflap were notorious pegwarmers.

The DOTM toys of the twins, however, were downright atrocious toys with some of the most abysmal transformation schemes I have ever experienced.
