Saw Jurassic World Rebirth today. It’s an okay movie. I liked how the dinosaurs this time around act more like actual animals instead of slasher movie villains. They show curiosity, motivation and fear, even predators that give up when the puny humans prove more trouble than the mouthful they are worth. The cinematography is good with lots of well-shot scenes and usage of background and unfocused camera shots. Several memorable scenes all over the film but nothing much tieing it together. The plot is basically a video game campaign with a tutorial, fetch quests, mid-boss and a final boss. I’ve compared some of the World movies to Resident Evil but this straight up could have easily been Dino Crisis 4. Lots of superfluous crap to the script, making the long runtime drag even longer. The family could have been excised entirely and nothing would change. The spinosauruses are just backup dancers for the mosasaurus and that thing commands enough attention as is. There’s heroic sacrifice and betrayal subplots started but don’t actually go anywhere. A character sustains an injury that alternates between crippling and nonexistent depending on the needs of the scene. The mutant dinosaurs are stupid. The winged raptors don’t do anything that regular raptors couldn’t aside from a divebomb entrance while the D-Rex is ugly and could just as easily have been a regular Rex aside from setting up one scene where it is literally Godzilla-sized. Convinced those are just there to sell action figures. Human characters are alright but you will not remember any of them by the time the end credits roll.
Decent popcorn movie. Not the worst thing to see in theaters but probably better to wait on streaming. Definitely could have done with some trimming. If everything else were exactly the same but the run time were about 30 minutes less, I’d probably give it a full recommendation.
