I was still a kid when Energon was current, and even I was like "... really?" when the plot just starts doubling back on itself halfway through.

The combination of the "break the cycle" line and the shots of Primes from other realities/timelines/whatever did kind of lead into the trope of circular history and conflict. That history will always take the long way to get back to the Autobots fighting the Decepticons, Optimus fighting...
