RIP Peter Cullen

Man, this has not been a good week for people I grew up watching and listening to.
Mr Cullen had an impressive body of work, and he will be missed. RiP, and condolences to his family.
I knew Mr. Cullen was a prolific voice actor, but going back and reading the sheer list of stuff he did is still mind-blowing.

I am glad that he lived long enough to do Optimus in the Travis Knight movies. Not that I felt that those were top-tier Transformers media or anything (Bumblebee is probably what I would consider the best live action film, but I also feel that bar is pretty low), but I'm glad that the "Give me your face!" stuff wasn't the last time he voiced the character.

I'm incredibly sad to hear this.

I wrote a bit a while ago about how important Prime was to me growing up, and how that noble, selfless nature he had with leadership and empathy was incredibly inspiring. Not all of that came from the show, but it always came with Cullen's voice performance in my head because of that tone and gentle wisdom that he spoke of his brother inspiring.

Sadly age does come to us all, and I'm glad that he lived a full live and is survived by his children, and in more recent years had got to go to conventions and hear from many fans about how much he did for us all in this fandom and his career of incredible performances.

Thank you for being you Mr Cullen, and for what you left us with.

RIP.

You know, I was reading some comments on social media where people were talking about him. One of them I read said that he was a 6-year-old kid when the 2007 movie came out, and he was talking about how much that Cullen meant to him as Optimus Prime. This was a grown man that grew up with the bayverse films and the TF: Prime series, not like us G1 old timers. It made me smile that there are two separate generations of TF fans that grew up with Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime. I hope that we all continue this onward by showing our children these cartoons and movies so that the next generation gets to experience it too.

I liked the Beast one he did last. The ending with him and Unicron was pretty cool.

Our old friend and longtime fandom member HOOKS wrote a lovely little tribute.

Our Robot Dad
Wow that was good. I’m glad I’m already out on bereavement leave. I don’t think I could have worked today even if my Grandma hadn’t just died.

I’m a mess and most people around me don’t get it. I’m glad to have peers that do. I’ll probably give my wife Hooks’s article to help her understand.

I did a little searching - lots of articles talk about his roles, but I wanted to know more about what he was like as a person. Not just voicing Optimus, but about Peter Cullen himself.

I really liked the clip where he talks about his brother Larry's influence on how he played Optimus, and Hooks did a good job where he described every role after Larry's passing being a tribute.

The Eeyore reference in the middle of this one made me smile.

Laughing feels weird right now, but King of the Cows is fun.

It's weird.
I never even met the man and I'm usually more centred when it comes to celebrity deaths because while it's sad, it's not like I knew them. So it's easy to process.
This one, though, is hitting in a way I didn't foresee.

I was just as much a Batman fan as I was a Transformers fan as a kid and Kevin Conroy's passing, RIP, was sad but it didn't hit like this.

I donno. Cullen was special I guess. I think Transformers was my first "fandom" if you can call it that. I asked my parents for an Optimus Prime for my fifth birthday and they were so confused 🤣

Optimus was just the good guy. He was who I compared Luke Skywalker, Batman, Superman, Duke, the Red Ranger, and everyone else against. Part of that, the biggest part, was Peter Cullen giving Prime humour, warmth, and kindness. A lot of the moral lessons in that show are simple, but they're not simple to a four or five year old. They mattered.

I had friends too, friends whose dads weren't around or in the picture. I know "robot truck dad" has become a meme, but I've had at least two friends of mine say Optimus was almost a father figure to them.

Peter Cullen meant a lot to me, and I know he meant so much more to many others. I don't know. I knew this was coming. Dude's been sick and cancelling con appearances for a while now, but I donno. I need to sit. I need to process it, and we need to appreciate his legacy and what he left behind.

I'm reminded of when Bob Saget passed away back in 2022 and all the tributes and articles about him labeled him "America's Dad" in honor of him having played Danny Tanner on Full House. In a sense, where Bob Saget's Danny Tanner might be remembered as "the greatest TV dad", Peter Cullen's Optimus Prime is "the greatest TV dad who wasn't biologically a dad", which might be even more meaningful.

Larry must have been a heck of a guy.
One story Peter told about Larry inspiring his Optimus besides the "Be a real hero. Be strong enough to be gentle," quote is that when the Cullen brothers were little, whenever Larry got serious and upset, he didn't raise his voice but rather lowered it. If Peter had playfully taken something of Larry's and wouldn't give it back, instead of yelling at Peter, Larry would slowly get real up close to Peter's face, deepen and lower his voice, and say in a very slow, ominous tone, "Peter... Give it back..." And Peter would nervously say, "Uh, okay, Larry!" before hastily handing it over to his brother.

When Peter imitated Larry's "Give it back" line, he used basically the same sullen voice he used for Optimus in the Bay movies and TF: Prime.

Bay Prime is definitely scarier when he lowers his voice.

I'm going to rewatch TF07 this weekend. It remains my favorite theater experience, and no small part of it was how Peter Cullen's voice sounded on oversized theater speakers. I had the pleasure of watching it with normies who didn't know who Optimus Prime is. They walked away understanding why Optimus Prime is a big deal. I think he is at least a factor in why that movie was such a runaway hit.
