Crazy predictions?

Metroid Federation Force 2/ Prime Hunters 2 - basically, Metroid Blast from Nintendoland realized as a full on proper game similar to Halo.

R.O.B 2 - Amiibo, mouse controls, WiFi and AI chip though leans on Switch 2 processor.

Disaster Day of Crisis remake/remastered

I really just want a new Star Tropics game.

Y'all making me cry over here. 😿 😭

Every single one of those would be great news to me.

The Nintendo Direct is here! Is this the best Direct ever? Or a horrible crushing disappointment? (Spoiler: It's somewhere in the middle.)

It was great for everyone except me*.

* And people like me, I guess.

I played the Starfox demo and while nice, I simply jumped on the N64 version in N64 classics, there's no real incentive to purchase that game, no hint it's doing much beyond cutscenes I'll watch on Youtube.

I rather like the visuals and cutscenes, so...

You know that patent Nintendo had for a dual screen attachment? after VR Boy Classics, I guess it's on the table to have a Wii U Classics with NintendoLand, Starfox Zero, Yoshi's Woolly World, maybe Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD. It could also be used for a DS Classics (encompassing DS to New 3DS) with New Super Mario Bros, Zelda: Phantom Hourglass and so on.

Which sounds cool on the surface. I'd definitely love to play some Zelda HD as well as some other WiiU games on an updated system. But I'd have to see how much they ask for it. Controllers are expensive enough. Add a screen to it like the Wii U,..could get pricey.

But if they can make a controller with a screen that doesn't break the bank, I would be so there for it!

Alternatively, and probably cheaper: What if they made a pair of wireless dongles that let you cast the Switch 2's main video output to the TV wirelessly, so you can just use the built-in screen as the second screen? Though, if they really wanted WiiU emulation to be on the table, you'd think they would have just designed the Switch 2 and its dock with wireless video beaming capabilities built in, so no additional hardware would be required.

The problem with Wii U was splitting the focus was too much for some gamers so it was used as a map in most games.

The problem with a dual screen attachment would be cost. It'd be upwards of a hundred and fifty dollars/pounds.

Edit: I heard Skyward Sword works better on switch 2 thanks to better gyro so less recalibrating. I may revisit it.

Be cool if there was just an option for those with a Switch and a Switch 2 to use one as the second screen controller.

Or even two of a kind. Could happen. I think we have three different types of Switch 1 around here.

Maybe they'll do something different with Switch 2 revisions:
Instead of Lite, a portable Switch 2 might be a Switch 2 Dual Screen handheld harkening back to DS.
Instead of Oled, a Switch 2 Elite with a better LCD screen and a bit more power under the hood for performance and better visual quality.

The first one sounds risky but it might work if marketted to people who owned one as a kid. I heard there's problems with VRR and small Oled screens so it wouldn't be beyond reason for Nintendo to be looking for better hardware.

None of those options sound financially or practically viable:
A “dual screen Switch 2” makes ZERO sense. None of the games are really designed for it, it has questionable viability with the Switch’s primary feature (the pick up and play between docked and handheld), and would cost as much or more for a feature that isn’t “standard”, and unlikely to be supported outside whatever meager support Nintendo might provide. And given how they’ve been handling the Classics Catalog? It would NOT be enough to support a new hardware configuration.
A more practical solution for bringing DS and 3DS titles to the Switch 2 would be a side by side implementation with the option of a special “controller dock” that locks onto one side of the system to use the existing Switch 2 in a “TATE” mode.

A “Switch 2 Elite” is basically an implementation of the “pro” mid-life upgrades we’ve seen the past decade. Being in the midst of a tech component crisis, I don’t see the practical justification. It’s basically a repeat of the pandemic/crypto crisis that likely prevented the OLED Switch 1 revision from getting any hardware upgrades when that was launched. I don’t see a practical reason for a hardware bump when the existing Switch 2 is capable of performance on par or greater than the Xbox Series S (the current generation ground floor). The Switch 1 proved that competent developers can do wonders even on the limitations of mobile hardware. Powerful hardware, mind you, but still power constrained mobile hardware.

With the CURRENT consoles have seen 50+% price jumps over the past 12-18 months, when the Xbox Series X and PS5 Pro are hitting $800-900, Nintendo is back down to being the cheapest console option. I don’t think a “Pro” or “Elite” marginal update is really necessary, and would probably cost more than what people would be willing to pay for such a device.

May I remind you that the Virtual Boy Dock exists?

Which is why I see a separate Online purchasable controller as a possibility (though I worry about the price point).

But I don't see them doing a whole revamp to the system itself like suggested above. That would fundamentally change the way the Switch 2 operates.

Now I could maybe see, like for a completely new generation console (hopefully a good few years in the future since the Switch 2 is still very new) maybe something that can fuse the WiiU functionality with the Switch functionality. Like, if the Switch 2 is a Game Boy Advance that docks to the television, maybe the next console could be a DS that docks to the console. And the lower screen would detach from the dockable upper screen and becomes the WiiU type controller with further detachable joycons!

I didn't realise the tech component shortage was a long term thing. Oh well.

Also, while it can compete with Series S, it's really just a portable PS4/Xbox One.

I’ve seen reports that the current AI-derived memory shortages lasting anywhere from the next 2-5 YEARS. Some newer CPU technology is now putting strain on CPU stocks, raising prices. Due to broader geo-political issues (like a bullshit conflict involving a vital trade route in the Middle East) regarding transport of strategic resources (like Helium), the ability to utilize more advanced manufacturing methods is getting more expensive. And there’s also a general silicon wafer shortage, in part due to issues related above.
I think Nintendo is going to just be content to keep getting their SoCs and be able to continue selling consoles. And again, if the Switch 2 sees comparable support to Switch 1, competent developers are more than capable of making the system “punch above its weight”.

I recall a LOT of people just calling the Switch 1 a “portable Xbox360/PS3” as well, but thanks to newer software and technologies, we saw the first Switch, as I like the term, “punch above its weight class”. Doom Eternal was never going to run on a PS3. Feral Interactive’s ports of Grid Autosport and Alien Isolation actually performed BETTER than the PS4 iterations of the same games. Ace Combat and Yakuza saw late-life ports that were quite competent, standing up to the PS4, if not Xbox Series S. They might not always have been the BEST way to play ports from more powerful platforms, but most were generally PLAYABLE.

With the next console generation is being talked about now, the component shortages and cost increases are going to weigh heavy. If the Switch 2 can holds its own against the current crop of consoles, I think it will be in good hands as the “next generation” consoles are looking at launch prices at or above $1000

Moving on, Unreal 5.8 Lumen Lite is now possible on Switch 2.

After a few weeks in preview, Epic Games has officially launched Unreal Engine 5.8 in time for this year's Unreal Fest Chicago. The update introduces advanced worldbuilding and terrain creation tools (whose heavy AI-integration may have caused legendary level designer Sjoerd de Jong to leave the company) , high-quality real-time vegetation authoring, and a Lumen Lite mode to deliver 60 FPS on Nintendo Switch 2 for the final major release powering several PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S games, as Epic is ramping up work on Unreal Engine 6.

TBH I'm not sensitive to framerates, I don't care if I lose a little light or textures in games, I rested on Xbox Series X/PS5 and am still wowed by PS4 games. I have Resident Evil Village for Switch 2 and Xbox Series X (I bought it for Xbox One X), I put on that Ray tracing mode people talk just a few weeks ago to see what the fuss is about and am not really impressed, this isn't like PS4 to Switch or Xbox 360 to Wii it's different this time. I do see differences with Resident Evil Requiem but not much, even then I'd play it on Switch 2 if I wanted but if I wanted to just sit and watch it, I'd watch one taken from a High end PC complete with Path tracing as a movie.
I'd buy Halo Campaign Evolved for Switch 2 over Series X if it came out, I will buy Resident Evil Veronica for Switch 2 first and hope for ports of Silent Hill 2, Metal Gear Solid Delta but right now, am content with what's there.

Also they updated Mario Kart World with 2 new tracks and didn't tell you.

So what goes on at Nintendo? Do their games developers invent stuff and throw it in their publishers faces and say "We made this, market it.", does their marketting break into their developers labs at night to get an idea of what games they're making?

As for Metroid, given their an IP company and breaking into movies, watch this turn out to be a movie in the vein of The Mandalorian where Samus breaches a secret GF lab withg Metroids and X parasites and done entirely in first person.
