Energon Universe - ongoing Transformers and G.I. Joe comics from Skybound

So...either this is a PTSD flashback...OR...Megatron is still has a psychic link with the Quintessons via that Quintesson Matrix in his chest. [...] So...I guess we can probably assume this is something caused by the Quintesson Matrix? That's probably a explanation. Unless Megatron's just crazy. Because, given everything that's happened to Megatron in this universe already, I couldn't blame him. But...both things could be true.

I definitely think it's an ongoing connection to the Quintesson Matrix, as it feels like a big personality shift - before he was more Darth Vader-ish (intimidating, cold, detached, until the rage spilled forth) whereas here he comes across as more psychotic and bloodlusty, actually taking pleasure in it. So I think he's being influenced again.

So...now Megatron can permanently kill other Transformers. Supposedly. I have my doubts that this will actually stick. At least, if Megatron kills anyone who's actually important.

I don't think it's any sort of new power that only Megatron has, I think it's just the nature of sparks and death - you're not dead-dead until the spark is deteriorated, and one way to do that is the rather macabre way that occurs here. Also interesting that Skywarp (who's come off as a bit of a fanatic) grins at it while the other Decepticons seem to show trepidation.

There an alt mode?

I like that her new design echoing his in so many ways suggests that the "look" is standard, a bit like a uniform for Magni.

-ZacWilliam, now someone draw Bumblebee Magnus, Prowl Magnus, etc...

You know what's funny? Y'all remember the Power of the Primes fan vote, how Arcee was one of the candidates that people could vote on to be the next Prime? Well, even though she didn't win, John Warden was once asked about what might have happened if she had won, and he said one of the ideas they were floating as a potential Prime name for her was "Arcana Magnus".

While that seemed baffling at the time he said that (as why would a Prime have the name "Magnus" instead of "Prime", and a first name taken from Brainstorm's Nebulan Headmaster instead of her own name?), in hindsight, it now seems oddly prescient.

I was remembering that, and mused whether there were any design concepts that might've been used for this new body. But this one doesn't look all that toyetic to me (especially since we don't even know what the alt mode looks like or is supposed to be), and it does seem to be aping Magnus more, especially the shoulders and chest.

(Kinda wish they went with "Arcana Magnus" here, now that you mention it, though I can understand the potential confusion with Brainstorm's HM).

Not to mention the high probability that the comic creators had no awareness of the name, since it was only ever stated by Warden in an in-person interaction at a SDCC 2018 breakfast event, and the one source that reported on it is now only accessible the WayBack Machine.

So they've killed Slingshot, Thundercrackers a good guy, Megatron might not be entirely himself and Trailbreakers been torn to pieces. Seems familiar but at least they're doing a better job with a Hasbroverse.

And some discussion.
In GI Joe, it looks like we got us ninjas! This is not a drill! We're finally following up on the Scarlett miniseries!

In Transformers, Megatron has a vision that's kicking off a new story arc. A secret that will change his life! It probably has something to do with the Quintesson Matrix, but who knows what? We just saw him taking life by drinking in sparks like a vampire. Maybe he can "remix" the souls inside him to create new life? A darker take on how the regular Matrix is supposed to give life?

And in Void Rivals, they're teasing something called a "Elite Sharkticon". That's probably not just a regular Sharkticon with a fancy hat, or Hasbro changing the name of it's size classes, again. Chances are that's a Sharkticon...that actually gets a name! Oooh! Maybe it'll be more than that, but I'm betting on a Sharkticon with SLIGHTLY more personality and individualism than normal.

Wasn't Sky-Byte an elite sharkticon in one of Botcon's continuities?

Transformers #29 is out this week!

As Megatron consumes Trailbreaker's spark, the rest of the Decepticons look on with some trepidation (apart from Skywarp, who looks positively gleeful). Optimus suddenly attacks, striking Megatron with his energon axe. The two grapple, and Megatron is about to blast Optimus with his fusion cannon when Shredhead intercedes, absorbing the shot with his shield. The rest of the Autobot forces arrive. Megatron orders the Constructicons to the Ark, and the two sides commence battle.

Hook, Bonecrusher and Scavenger make it to the Ark, pursued by the two Magnusses. The Constructicons are able to break Soundwave out, and combine into the top half of Devastator, still deadly in the confines of the ship.

Back outside, the two forces continue their all-out battle. Megatron prepares to execute the traitor Thundercracker, but is suddenly struck by another possession and collapses. Unfortunately for him, most of the remaining Decepticons have been taken down or are surrendering. But before the Autobots can complete the victory, a now-complete Devastator (notably holding Blitzwing, Dirge and Slipstream) and Soundwave charge through, creating an opening. Soundwave picks up the fallen Megatron, and orders the Decepticons to retreat.

Optimus recognizes they have the upper hand, and orders the Autobots to pursue and finish this. Only for Elita One to appear and demand satisfaction!

Basically one giant fight issue, but one I really enjoyed. I feel like this is the first time Mara's really gotten to show off, and there's a lot of beautiful panels here.

Also, dang you suck Elita. I know you've got your beef with Optimus, but surely ending Megatron and the Decepticons once and for all takes precedence?

Hey! I'm finally back again! It's been a busy month for me. And I might be busy again, soon. I might not be in this thread for a little bit again, but we'll see. For now, let's talk about some comics! Megapost time!

I'm going to start where I left off with GI Joe #18.

This is a spotlight issue for Roadblock, and I think it's a lot of fun. It's basically a little sidestory adventure, but I enjoyed it. Plus, there's some teases about what's coming in the next arc. Not the most "important" issue ever, but it's a fun one. I liked it!

Roadblock has hung up his guns, and has taken up the spatula, working in a food truck! I WOULD try his food! Handing out delicious food and life lessons to the local kids. He's living the dream!

Until Tomax and Xamot show up, at least. They want to recruit Roadblock in order to lead a new chain of foodtrucks for them. That they're secretly using to recruit people to join Cobra. That's a very Saturday Morning Cartoon kind of plan for them, and I approve.

So, the Crimson Guard brought a gatling gun to a food truck fight. Good thing Roadblock can bench-press a jeep!

T&X mention recruiting someone else for their food truck plans with "beach shirts". Not sure if they're talking about Chuckles or someone else.

So, Roadblock uses the new gatling gun he's "borrowed" from the Crimson Guard to scare away T&X. And nary a cop to be seen. Funny, that.

The whole community comes together to help repair Roadblock's food truck.

And then Shooter shows up to recruit Roadblock into Night Force! The team's coming together! Hopefully, they finish up this plotline pretty soon, because they're taking their sweet time. Can Roadblock run a successful food truck AND fight for a clandestine government force at the same time? Find out...eventually, I'm sure.

Meanwhile, Cobra Commander plans to go after more Energon deposits around the world. And he uses footage from Major Bludd's new robot eyes to learn that Destro is the one who betrayed him! Oooh...someone's getting thrown to the snakes, soon!

In the letters page, they actually say that there's ONE more, unexpected member of Night Force still coming. Part of me says it could be Snake Eyes, but that does feel too obvious. Maybe this is when Scarlet will come back into the story?

Also, Cobra-La WILL return in the future! I'm actually looking forward to it!

Next up, Void Rivals #26!

This is a solid enough issue. There is some escalation here. But, I'll admit, I'm not terribly impressed or invested in what seems to be the main threat of this arc. Hopefully, there's a twist here. Because if the rest of this event is just dealing with a bunch of mindless minions, it might be a bit underwhelming.

Darak tries to save his friend Garad from dying in the void of space. Dear, sweet, precious Garad! But, unfortunately, being in the void of space is not a good thing. And the only way back is down....down all the way to the center of the black hole at the center of their world that's pulling them both in! Darak didn't think this one all the way through.

Lucky, he's saved...by another friend hitting him with a spaceship! I feel like that would cause more damage than it'd solve, but I guess these guys are more durable than they look?

Meanwhile, Judge Naven of the Quintessons has a message for Zalilak to spread to his people. "We own this planet now...deal with it. Please don't fight back, it's so much paperwork." Zalilak does not appreciate this and...just punches him in his giant, ugly face. Too bad he has 4 others. His bodyguards are absolutely powerless in the face of someone...walking towards them...slowly.

So, the Judge releases the hounds! Or...uh...Sharkticons, in this case.

So, now everyone has to deal with a bunch of rampaging Sharkticons attacking all over their world. And it's looking pretty bad for Darak until Solila shows up in the nick of time to save him!

Although, I'll admit, "Take my hand" can be taken a few different ways when there's so many Handroids around.

Hopefully, this event doesn't just turn into fighting a bunch of Sharkticons. Because that's what some of the covers kind of make it look like. That feels like it could get pretty repetitive. And, frankly, unlike with Transformers, I'm not sure if the art is quite good enough for the action to carry the book. But, we'll see.

Transformers #29 is next up!

This is basically a all fights issue! Not much in the way of reveals or moving character moments, here. But, what he do get is pretty action-packed and fun to look at. There's a lot of posters in the making here! It's a fun issue. Although, it seems like next issue could be more talky, we'll see.

Megatron's...ugh...getting really all up in there. There's some real lip-action to him while he's sucking down that Energon. He likes what he likes and doesn't care who knows it! He's not shy!

Good thing Optimus is here to interrupt his "meal". I don't know how much more of that I could have stomached.

"I have a DEEP ROOTED passion...FOR YOUR DEATH!" And fine cuisine. Though, I guess they kind of go hand-in-hand, now.

And then EVERYONE joins the fight. This is a great double-page splash page.

Inside the Ark, Soundwave shows the Constructicons how to free them, but our Magnuses are here to stop them. Not all the Constructicons are here, but that doesn't stop them from forming the somewhat-powerful, mostly-unstoppable...TATOR! Not a full Devastator. But, "Tator" is still pretty effective! It helps that a full Bruticus is here to back him up.

MANY A-FIGHTS ARE HAD! Bulkhead seems to have been watching some Flintstones reruns.

Megatron is about to get his revenge on Thundercracker for betraying him, when he has another of his "episodes". Soundwave saves him while he's in the middle of his "weird eye thing".

Optimus is just about to go after the Decepticons to finish the fight. When who should show up but Elita-One and Cliffjumper! Oooh...we're in for another couple's spat, aren't we?

In the letters page, we actually get a pretty insightful quick breakdown on how comics are made.

And we'll bring it all back around, with the newest book to come out, GI Joe #19.

Duke finds out about the giant robot who's been hiding in his garage, and he is STEAMED. And we start a new arc hunting for Energon around the world. And...a surprise guest star! It's a solid enough start to the new arc. I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes.

Zartan's Hawk-face is creepy. And you just KNOW he has a whole wall of those things in a room somewhere.

Aparently, Zartan needs Energon for...stuff? I feel like it's pretty unclear what, but we'll see. The Hunt for Energon is on!

Duke's not intimidated by a robot three times his size. He's ready to go RIGHT NOW! But, everyone else seems surprisingly chill with all this. Baroness and Cover Girl are taking the news about alien giant robots like champs! But, Duke's pretty mad about everyone keeping secrets from him.

"No robot will EVER be a Joe!" Robo-Joe hangs his head in shame.

So, Duke...arrests the giant robot. Sure, buddy, whatever makes you feel better.

Meanwhile, we see what happened to Matt Trakker after the FCBD issue. He took a pretty nice trip all around the world. Really saw the sights. Makes me wish *I* could go on the run from a clandestine government organization *pouts*. Eventually, he gets contacted by someone offering him information about Miles Mayhem.

Meanwhile, the other Joes talk about how they really need to recruit more people. They're...really taking the giant-robot news in stride, huh? Just ignoring that elephant in the room. As for more recruits, given this franchise, I don't think they'll have too much of a problem. Just give it time.

Zartan/Hawk sends the rest of GI Joe out around the world to find Energon for him.

Meanwhile, Hound finally tells Duke who killed his friends...Starscream! Feels a little late, since Starscream's already gotten in comeuppance over in Transformers, but he can always use another round of humble pie.

Duke wants to talk to Hound's boss, Optimus. But, Hound needs to get repaired first before he can contact him. And it seems like the only person who can do that is...Matt Trakker.

Matt contacts Agent Walker during a thematically-fitting NASCAR race. And Matt learns Miles is on the run. But, then who should start attacking him but...Scrap Iron in his monster truck! Who...*googles*...nope, that's not from MASK, that's a obscure Cobra agent, who's just working for Miles Mayhem. Huh. That really felt like a opportunity to bring in more VENOM guys, but I guess not yet.

Next time...Duke meets Optimus! I'm sure that'll go swimmingly. All tea and cookies, I'm sure.

Woof! Got through all those, but we're not done yet. I had to split this up into two posts because it went on too long. I do tend to go on!

In a bit of news that actually ties into that last GI Joe comic...they just announced Skybound is adding another book to the Energon Universe. And to no one's surprise...it's M-M-MASK! We're apparently soon entering "Phase Two" of the Energon Universe. Well, it should be fine, until we get to Phase Four, anyway. Then, we'll have to start worrying.
Robot Kirkman also gave kind of a interesting speech to a group of comic retailers. Even going into how the Energon Universe started out with him getting into Transformers statues during the pandemic. It's kind of interesting.

And finally, and...frankly probably least, the May solicitations are out!

I'll even mention this outside of spoiler tags. Outside of the normal Energon Universe books, Image is also putting out two other Transformers books.

One's a sequel to "The Worst Bot Ever" OGN.

And the other book is a Transformers The Movie trade paperback, collecting both the Marvel and IDW adaptations of the 80's movie. So, with this, you might be able to complete your Marvel collection via Image. Hopefully, the IDW version is the "enhanced" version with additional art that they only released in trade before. It'll be out in August.

20f9a510-78.jpg

20f9a510-79.jpg

And some discussion about the solicits:
We're getting another Energon Universe special collecting this year's FCBD book, for people who miss out on the free version. They're hiding the cover. Unfortunately...I think we got spoiled as to what it's hiding. I'm guessing that's going to be a MASK cover to promote the new book that's going to be coming out, soon.

The GI Joe issue looks to be oddly Halloween-y for a book coming out in May. Also featuring the first appearance of Crystal Ball in this universe! All I know about him is that he has a kind of neat-looking newer toy. I'm a sucker for translucent plastic.

Over in Transformers, it sounds like Shockwave is leading some Decepticons back on Cybertron. So, Elita's leading a new team to fight him. So...there's a non-zero chance Optimus could be going back to Cybertron with Elita to deal with Shockwave, I guess? Hmm..could be interesting. Unless Arcee or someone else is the one to go with Elita. I'm not sure who else would be "surprising". Maybe Carly?

In Void Rivals, the Quintesson War ends! How does it end? We don't know! But, STUFF probably happens! Big stuff! It's pretty vague!

And finally...Ballpoint is going to switch bodies with Megatron! Oh, what wacky sitcome-style shenanigans will result from that?!

Okay...I think I'm all caught up, now! At least until the next Void Rivals comes out this week. We'll see what happens. Hopefully, I don't get quite this behind, again.

Re: Zartan
Its currently my guess is that Energon is somehow related to his "shapeshifting" ability. I know its not really shapeshifting, but that seems more then just some random costume change and false face.

I was thinking that.

As for Scrap Iron, he played a fairly prominent role in "Arise, Serpentor, Arise" from the old cartoon. Amusingly, I think he even shares the same voice as Scrapper, the Constructicon, if I remember correctly.

Yes, but I don't mean just the same actor, but literally the same voice used across both. (I'm not misremembering, am I? He does have a few different voices he does, right?)
