Like many of you G1 fans, I grew up in the 1980s and 90s, when the kids toy aisles were dominated by GI JOE and Transformers. Yet a new toy was coming to change the entire way we played, the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). It's hard to believe, but Nintendo was synonymous with gaming in the 1980s and early 1990s. Sega had not shown up to challenge it with its 16-bit Genesis, and Atari's desperate attempts to compete with their 5200 and the 7800 were pitiful at best. Unless you had a PC, Nintendo meant video games and vice versa. Now, a lot of franchises had at least one Nintendo video game. Franchises like the Flintstones, The Incredible Crash test dummies, Indiana Jones, Star Trek, Tiny Toons, the jetsons, the Simpsons, Felix the cat, Spiderman, X-men, Robocop, Batman, Star Wars, and many more franchises had games on the NES. Heck, TMNT had 4 games on the NES and GI JOE, Hasbro's other big property, had two games itself! So why wasn't there a Transformers game on the NES? Well, there was, sort of. There were actually two G1 Transformers games released for the Nintendo in the 1980s, but both of them were only released in Japan for their Nintendo Famicom, which was their version of the NES. The first game, which is probably the most well known of the two games, was called Mystery of Convoy. It was released in 1986 as regular Famicom cartridge game, and is known for its extreme difficulty. You play as Ultra Magnus, making your way through various levels, trying to avoid seekers, and other Decepticons blasting you. You can transform at any time, and will need to do so every now and then to proceed. Eventually, you make it to the boss fight, which most of the time is a giant Decepticon logo. However, you do fight Bruticus, Menasor, Megatron, and Trypticon as bosses as well. The game, while probably the best G1 Transformer game of the 1980s, could have used some tweaks, like a life bar that allowed you to take more than one hit would have made the game much more enjoyable. Still, the game never was published in the US, and only found its way over here via emulation and Famicom importers. You can check out the full gameplay below: The second G1 game, called Transformers: The Headmasters, was released the following year in 1987 in Japan for the Famicom disk system. For those not aware, the Famicom disk system was an add-on disk drive for the Famicom that allowed it to play disk-based games instead of the usual cartridge based games we were all used to playing. This was necessary at the time to keep up with demand for games, as the cartridge games required computer chips that were in short supply at the time. Lots of notable game series were released his way in Japan, such as Zelda 1 and 2, Castlevainia, Super Mario Bros 2, Kid Icarus, and Metroid to name a few! I suspect that Transformers: The Headmaster isn't well known due to it being one of the nearly two hundred Disk System games instead of a cartridge. You unlock a few Transformers by rescuing them in the levels. The are two types of levels. One where you play in Vehicle mode, blasting things as you drive or fly along the surface of each world, with each transformer having a different alt mode and different firing angles. The second level type has you in a generic robot mode, that looks nothing like any Transformer, going underground while blasting various things in locked rooms to go to the next room until you reach a boss, who is just a color pallet swap of a generic character. Then at the end, you and your rescued Autobots will all jump inside Metroplex, and fight Scorponok. It's not that great of a game. In fact, if you told me that it was originally a different IP altogether and made into a Transformers game like they did with Super Mario Bros 2, I would believe you. As very little in this game has to do with Transformers. For example, I could swap seven art assets out of the game and it would no longer be a Transformer game. I can definitely see why they left this one in Japan. Check out the full gameplay below: While we did get a couple of G1 Transformer games on early PCs like the Commadore 64 in the US, none of them are really that great. In fact, it wasn't until many years and many attempts later that we would get a Transformers game in the US that was better than Mystery of Convoy. However, that is a different story for another time...
It's been two weeks since we last left our heroes, and now we see why: Starscream wasn't kidding when he said he was putting Wheeljack to work! In Episode 22, "Drone Alone," Optimus acts as a diversion while Mirage and the rest of his team mount an attempt to rescue Wheeljack. How does it go? Well, watch and find out! And if you keep watching, 22 is followed by episodes 21, 20, and 19, in case you're some kind of psycho who spits in the face of chronal continuity. As for my thoughts on the episode (spoilers abound): Feel free to talk about this episode here, or the series as a whole over in the "Transformers Cyberworld: I Axed You a Question" thread in our forums! Earlier this weekend, some images got out for the upcoming releases of both Leige Maximo and Nexus Prime. However, it appeared that Nexus Prime's reveal told only part of the story. About one-fifth, one might even say. You see, each Prime kinda has a thing, and Nexus Prime's thing is the Enigma of Combination -- he's the guy from which all other Combiners are derived. So then, where is this guy's combination? The answer, as we've just discovered, lies in a teaser (complete with John Williams' Superman theme) on the Instagram page of one Markclonus, professional toy designer for Hasbro and the guy who has given us so many behind-the-scenes previews over the last while. But rather than regale us with a variety of fancy poses and anecdotes, this time Mark has taken it to video: https://www.instagram.com/p/DUOa17xD9xC And if that doesn't embed properly for you and/or you lack the Instagram credentials necessary to view it, then behind the spoiler tag is a look at the final frame of the video, showing the god of gestalts in all his glory. As you can see, this Nexus Prime is a true mish-mash of Combiner components: In addition to NP himself showing off his combined mode cranium, there's the Superion Combiner frame, I believe with Air Raid as one of the legs, then Brawl from Bruticus as the other leg, while Blast-Off and Vortex are up in arms -- literally, with the latter borrowing a bit more Superion frame. Incidentally, people in the comments on the Instagram post are... a little displeased at this turn of events. Between wanting Nexus Prime to have his own dedicated group of limbs as he did in his debut appearance as part of the Transformers Collector's Club all those years ago, or simply not wanting to have to buy parts from other teams they have no interest in to make this combination a little less enigmatic, or just not wanting to have to dismantle their displays to present this Prime in all of his merged majesty, it seems many are simply left wanting more. But what do you think? Are you happy to have someone to pinch-hit while one of your team leaders is in the shop? Or do you think that the progenitor Prime of the Combiners shouldn't have to settle for hand-me-downs? Let us know in the comments below, and join in the "Transformers Age of the Primes" thread to make your thoughts further known to the community at large! Liege Maximo is a page right out of the orginal G2 comics, while Nexus Prime resembles a middle-ground between his original Energon-redeco version and the version shown in Transformers: One. As the Target exclusive Anniversary line continues to unfold, we get yet another look at one of the most anticipated figures of the line: Megatron as he was damaged in his final battle before claiming the life of Autobot leader Optimus Prime, with many not yet having a go-to Megatron in their collection, this comes as a perfect opportunity as a centerpiece to celebrate the 1986 all those many years ago. Notable differences from the retail release is the change in the head and chest areas for aptly battle damaged crumpled pieces as well as paint corresponding to said areas, as with recent releases, you can expect limited quantities through Hasbro Pulse as well as the Target website. Are you ready to let the slaughter begin? Tell us on our forums and other socials, and remember, it's AllSpark of the show.

However, a portal opens, leading to an exercise where fixing machines is the name of the game. Wheeljack's got this one on lock... right? Last week, we brought you a rumor that McDonald's was dusting off and reviving one of their most beloved Happy Meal toy concepts of all-time: The Changeables. This week, we're bringing you the confirmation: Don't know what a "Changeable" is? Don't worry, this Dinosaur Dracula article has got you covered. Hey, even with the skyrocketing cost of fast food these days, these are still more affordable than anything Hasbro is putting out, right? But better than a teaser, Donocropolis has shared a variety of images from McDonald's own social media to our forums showing off each Changeable, what they turn into, a catchphrase, and a fun fact about them. Hey, remember when Hasbro used to give us that kind of stuff on the box, or at least a website? Man, McDonald's is killing Hasbro with these, and they aren't even out yet. Anyway, the pics: Gotta say, these will probably look great alongside a collection of BotBots. Just a shame they didn't make one of the restaurant itself. Okay, granted, then it would just turn into a grey box, but maybe they could do a vintage-style restaurant like the Lil McDonald's collection did? Just a thought. And make it in Titan scale. Anyway, these will be available in US stores on January 27th, but which ones go to which other countries is anyone's guess, because they like to screw with us like that now, I guess. (Nothing for Canada so far... sigh.) Feel free to talk about these, or just the good times and great tastes you remember from your youth over in the "McDonalds Changeables Return!" thread in our forums! Yeah, this is a Transformers site. Doesn't mean we're above covering other nerdy news, especially when it comes to some of Hasbro/the brand's current partners in toy crime. In case you haven't seen it, Amazon MGM Studios has released a new official teaser trailer for the upcoming Masters of the Universe movie that we never thought would happen. Why would we think that? Because it's basically been in development hell for almost 20 years (one more would've done it!). For comparison, Sonic the Hedgehog's movie was only there for seven. Anyway, here's what they dropped on us: There's a lot to take in, and here to help with that is none other than the guy who wrote the book on Masters of the Universe (seriously, man, own it), "Pixel" Dan Eardley! Masters of the Universe, directed by Travis Knight of Bumblebee fame, will arrive in theaters on June 5th, 2026. What do you think? Is it hitting all the right notes so far? Are you tempted to check it out to see if it might finally stoke your craving for those Masters of the Universe x Transformers collaborative figures? Let us know in the comments, or chat about it in the "He-Man, and also the Masters of the Universe" thread in our forums! And remember: May the Power Protect You! ...wait...
