What stupid thing did the GOP say or do this time? Episode 3!

FB friend:

Republicans knowingly asked Judge Jackson a bunch of stupid questions, hoping that it would degrade her dignity to even answer such asinine questions.

Sadly, this is an effective strategy. If you repeatedly ask a political candidate some horrible question like "do you have sex with dogs", then eventually, if you have enough media clout, the person will be forced to answer. They can't just keep ignoring it, because you'll be able to swamp the airwaves with speculation about WHY they don't answer. So eventually, they'll have to say "no, I did not have sex with dogs". And simply by forcing them to say that, you have damaged their dignity.

Remember when Republicans complained about the "coarsening of America"?

This is going to be interesting. I don't even have someone to root for in this confrontation.

1967 Reedy Creek Improvement Act, which allows Disney to act as its own government

Yeah, maybe repeal that regardless.

It's a damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don't scenario. Allow it to exist as a giant company town, or make them submit to the fascist state?

i dunno, disney's pretty ******* evil, but banal entertainment megacorp evil is still less awful then genocidal Nazi death cult evil. like, only one of them wants most of the people i care about shoved in industrial furnaces.

This basically.

And because I think it needs clarifying: Disney does not have its own “government”. That‘s just the usual Republican spin to make Disney look bad. Basically, the Reedy Creek Improvement Act granted Disney authority to manage the the lands within the RCIA (basically the Walt Disney World properties and a good chunk of nearby lands).

So Disney is more like a “managed municipality”, than something like a city government. AFAIK, they don’t pass laws or anything (there’s only, like, 30 some people that actually LIVE in the area), but they do manage all the essential needs of the region like power generation and transmission, waste and recycling, water services, road services, environment services, etc.

And to be brutally honest…I trust Disney to manage such things FAR more efficiently and environmentally friendly than Orange County. Not only that, but shuttering the RCIA would make Florida responsible for a LOT of the WDW infrastructure which would cost tens of millions of dollars to upkeep. Ultimately, I think it’s all bluster to stir up support from the uninformed and easily riled up conservatives than a real threat. Florida really can’t afford to add Disney’s operations to all the other stuff they can barely afford to run.

wonko the sane?

You may test that assumption at your convinience.

Cletus is at least friendly, tries to be helpful, and well intentioned.

I don't think any of those things can be said of republican voters now, unless inside an environment in which they know they won't run into "communists"... because mccarthyism was just ******* wonderful the first god damn time.

That megacorp, and others like them, are more to blame for fascists getting into positions of power in the first place than anyone else is. If it weren't for their willingness to overlook those policies on the grounds that it means less taxes and fewer regulations, and donate millions to their campaigns, they wouldn't have enough support to get elected. It's not like the American public spent the last half century wishing they had someone to vote for who supported death camps for minorities, and having to settle for politicians who don't until they could finally get their voiced heard. Fascists took advantage of billion-dollar corporations' willingness to donate to anyone who said they'd have the corporations' backs, no matter how monstrous their policies might be.

fascism can't exist without capitalism, that's true - capitalists always ally with fascists to oppose socialists/communists. and it inevitably backfires on them once the fascists they thought were useful idiots end up accruing enough power to overthrow the capitalists.

Probably the same timeline where Hurricane Katrina happened during Obama's presidency.
