Sounds about right. That would make about 1/6th of the US population to be maga cultists assuming a roughly even split between Republicans, independents/other, and Democrats. Way too high but a minority of a minority still.

The "global child trafficking ring" narrative has always functioned more as a moral fig leaf than a genuine cause. It gave MAGA something they could frame as apolitical, unassailable and inherently virtuous so they could paint themselves as the righteous side while ignoring or excusing everything else about their dear leader.

Now we're seeing how conditional that "outrage" really was. Instead of confronting it, they're either denying it or twisting themselves into knots justifying Trump somehow. That's not the behavior of people motivated by a sincere desire to protect children. It's the behavior of people using "protect the children" as a political shield. And that actually tracks, given their attitudes on child labor and child marriage.

Like I said yesterday, people who actually care about kids probably do not make up a significant lobby or voting bloc. And I don't count parents who care about their own kids but not anyone else's as part of that group.

Yeah. And those people are too few and powerless to even get noticed, let alone affect policy.

And, as we saw when the FTC actually tried to enforce COPPA against YouTube, their enemies are very effective at manipulating the narrative to make them look like they're just the same group of people as the "think of the children" nutters.
