We live in a capitalist dystopia

They really need to clarify that a digital purchase is a purchase (not a license) for the purposes of making an archival copy.

Sony/whomever doesn’t have to pay to license/host it indefinitely but if you bought it you bought it.

I was thinking about getting a PS6 after Sony announced they were no longer releasing new games on PC, but if I can't buy the games on disc, then forget it.
I mean...the ONLY reason I got a PS5 with disc drive was because of my meager selection of PS4 games that ended up delisted (looking at you, Transformers Devastation!). PS5 games on disc are, generally, more hassle than they're worth, IMO. Unless you snag a really good deal on a physical version, I've largely abandoned buying physical games because you always end up waiting for MASSIVE amounts of data to install. And needing the disc and listening to the noisy ass drive spin for questionable reasons.

Physical games for modern consoles are the "game Key Cards" everyone forgot about.

wonko the sane?

You may test that assumption at your convinience.

I think that if a game company launched using actual cartridges again... they would absolutely just sweep the market.

Oh and make sure you get what you want from the PSN store for your PS3 and Vitas! Support for those consoles will begin ending in some markets at the end of the year, with full closure in July 2027.

I mean, yeah, it sucks losing access to the PSN Store on those devices...BUT...you're also looking at about 20 years of support for the PS3, about 15 for the Vita/TV. In some cases, the store has been active longer than the hardware has actually lasted. It's been close to decade since either platform saw a significant release of note, though the Vita platform was getting some indie titles until 2021.
I understand the business side...but it's not clear if you'll still be able to access purchases. And I know the Vita/TV has seen some odd "licensing" issues with games, so it's not clear how the PSN closure will effect that.

Amusingly, when I got my PS5, the new revised PSN finally "cross linked" a bunch of my older purchases, so I was still able to access a not insignificant number of PSP and PSOne titles, at least stuff they finally added to the Classics catalog and hadn't been replaced by "remaster" or "remake" versions.

So um....I think they're gonna have to walk this back. Massively. Or does nobody remember Helldivers 2?

Yeah I really don't see this decision standing after someone takes out a calculator and realizes that banning yourself from 170 countries is very profitable.

Ironbite-at all.

I was considering finally buying a PS5 when I have money again but I think I'll just stay the hell away from this company.

I'm genuinely surprised that the PS3 store is still operating. I thought it was the norm on consoles for digital storefronts to be shut down pretty much as soon as the console was discontinued. Or is it only Nintendo that does that?

I don't think even Nintendo does that. The 3DS store kept going for ages after the Switch came out.

As long as the store is still up, people can still buy from it, and server space is (relatively) cheap. Takes a long while for the purchase activity to fall to the point where it's losing more money than it's making.

Funny you should put it that way, because I checked just now, and the 3DS store was shut down in 2023, but existing purchases can still be re-downloaded. So by shutting it down, they actually pushed the ratio of money made to money lost from whatever it was at that point to 100%.

So we're likely going to end up with either the Highlander movie that doesn't exist, or Gundam X's satellite cannon(without a moonbase being involved). Assuming Kessler doesn't kick in before then.
