Funny little thing. Peter Thiel has fled America for . . . . . Argentina.
Of all the places he could have run to that choice is . . . . a bit on the nose.

Was he wanted for something?
California has an initiative on their ballot in November that could lead to higher taxes on billionaires, leading to him becoming concerned about the direction the country was going in, whereas Argentina has a right wing government who is happy to coddle the rich and stomp on the poor.

Glad New Zealand isn't right wing enough for him yet. (He has citizenship here annoyingly)

Something dumb happening in Europe for a change:

tl;dr Fender won a default court judgement over an AliExpress vendor for selling Stratocaster guitar knockoffs, and is now using that to try to bludgeon everyone else in Europe that sells similar guitars to stop and destroy any existing stock. Also they tried this via trademark in the US previously and failed, so this isn't their first time.

The dangers of digital “ownership” are cropping back up for Playstation owners in Europe and UK-
Due to a lapsed licensing agreement, Sony will be forcibly removing 551 film titles from StudioCanal from their online storefront AND users’ libraries. Refunds, you might ask? Of course not!

Here's hoping. Politicians my not understand games, but I'm sure some of them own movies and can understand what happened here.

wonko the sane?

You may test that assumption at your convinience.

Shame that it always has to affect them personally before they do something about it: despite the massive and public outcry against it.

Funny you should mention that, because it has bothered me from the beginning that there's a whole movement dedicated to keeping digital media playable forever, but that it only focuses on video games. Makes me wonder if the people behind it are the kind of elitists who think games are superior to other mediums.

I doubt it. There's just an urgency with games that's easy to rally around. DVDs exist but online-only games have no other option. That was the issue. The server goes offline and your game is just gone forever.

Games are more likely than movies, music, books, etc. to become permanently lost media if they ever go down.

Whenever I hear about an officially-unavailable game that's been preserved by fans, and it's anything from the last 20 years (as opposed to a rare old ROM finally being dumped), it's usually something like "fans created their own server" or "someone rewrote the game's code to make it work".

And official preservation is the same effort; there's a reason GOG's preservation program is a specific thing and not a category containing every old game they sell.

Right, with old movies you just make a local copy and burn it to a disk, and it's preserved, even if the legal situation makes actually distributing it a nightmare.

With an old MMO, in order to preserve it in a useable, playable state, the bare minimum requires being able to set up a private server, which isn't going to be as simple.

With an old digital release only game, you don't have to worry about the private server, but if you took it off your system after it was de-listed... I'm honestly not sure about legal options to get it back on. Somebody that has the game could copy it to removable media and hand it to you, but I don't know if loading that onto your system would be legal.
