Voltron The Movie

Hey, so this is a thing that stealthily got made over the winter! From Amazon-MGM Studios, Rawson Marshall Thurber (Director of Dodgeball, We're the Millers, and Red Notice) is helming this 80s anime adaption featuring Henry Cavill, along with Daniel Quinn-Toye, Sterling K. Brown, Rita Ora, Alba Baptista, Samson Kayo, John Kim, Tharanya Tharan, Laura Gordon, and Tim Griffin. Filming began last December, and wrapped a few weeks back.

Despite its high profile cast and nostalgic appeal, Amazon is reportedly looking to release Voltron straight to streaming instead of wide theatrical release.
This could be related to competition from Amazon's OTHER 80s revival, Masters of the Universe, which is slated for release June 5, 2026. However, Amazon did garner a good bit of success with the Road House remake, which was released exclusively to streaming to impressive numbers and strong critical response.

Yeah, this thread is the first I've heard of it. That's not a great sign. But I want to believe.

Yeah, this is a movie I would go to a theater to see, not gonna pay just for the privilege to stream it. If they release it on physical disc, I'll bite, though.

Not sure if it's related or intended as a tie-in, but it appears that Moderoid (the model kit line I got my mini Lion Voltron and Big O among others from) is doing Dairugger XV, Vehicle Voltron at some point.

If the price + tariff isn't stupid, I'd actually like this, as those kits scale, whatever it is, fits well on my Monster City shelf, better than any of the action figures, and they're usually fully transformable if the character itself can.

Apparently doing one of the MechaGodzillas, too. Possibilities.

Keep in mind it's only about seven or eight inches if my Lion Voltron is anything to go by, and all plastic, which means they don't have to worry about a lot of weight bearing. The Big O is probably the bulkiest and also looser than it should be (my fault, during assembly) but still works fine. Most connections will be simple round pegs, which don't lock, but at that scale it's not an issue and the robots generally are amazingly posable compared to nearly anything else. Here are the Lions vs some Biollantes. There may be some parts-swapping for combined form, Lion Voltron can use the normal lion heads but also comes with bigger Blue and Yellow ones for use as better feet (and also has flip-out heel spurs, which I've never seen on any other Voltron).

Moderoid kits instructions are always in Japanese, and these are one of those sorts where the text is actually helpful. I always keep a phone with the camera and Google Translate up, it's worked well enough for me.
