So I've long thought that they should do a remastering of the original series.. just go through and fix some of the errors (wrong person talking, miscolorations etc. etc.) I recently sat down and rewatched the first 7 episodes and man... this is an ugly show. Like when the characters are on model they're fine, but when they aren't? Woof
And that's just with episodes animated by Toei. Wait 'til you get to the ones animated by AKOM.

Hey, yeah, what is going on with that?

Like, did the Autobots just dump their ex-leader's dead body out into space? With no funerary barge or space tomb or coffin pod or anything to see him off respectfully? "Just toss him out into the void! He's dead metal anyway!" It made sense when Starscream did that to Megatron, but the Autobots aren't that callous.
Oh, what if they're pulling an even more controversial followup than "Dark Awakening" or Transformers: Kiss Players ?

If Unicron's destruction can do interesting things with causality (as in Marvel-G1 and Cybertron), then perhaps the site of his destruction in The Animated Movie might have pulled a different Optimus -- one from a universe where that disposal was a lot more plausible....

(A Shattered Glass redeco would get another use out of the Studio Series mold....)

Kiss Players would actually be a wild, and appropriate (there's an adjective I never thought I'd use in the same sentence as that line), followup here since it's set right after the movie AND Optimus is right there...

And weirdly, it's not like they haven't homaged them before, VERY recently, with their JEM crossover. Proving it can be done without causing a content alert.

Except Blaster.

And, debatably, Snarl.

And Sunstreaker and Hound.

Sunstreaker was part of Blaster's group back on Earth who fought a guerrilla campaign on Earth against the remaining Sweeps in the early drafts, so I would work on the headcannon something like that happened and was just cut for pacing reasons personally (obviously not exactly, given Wheeljack was there...)

Animating something like that and, say, some of the cut scenes from the battle of Autobot city at the end (you can't reinsert them, they are rightly cut for pacing and the soundtrack wouldn't work) would be really cool. I would put the chances of it happening at zero percent, but it would be cool.

People talk about adding new scenes to the '86 movie like it's something that can just be done on a whim without any issue, akin to live-action films restoring deleted footage that was filmed at the time of the original filming work but went unused in the final cut, or like Disney adding new scenes to their animated movies. But what people don't realize that is that such comparisons are like apples and chainsaws.

The reason live-action films can restore deleted footage to later releases of movies is because the footage already exists. All that the DVD/Blu-Ray companies have to do is acquire said preexisting footage, clean it up, and edit it back into the final cut of each movie as seamlessly as possible.

The reason Disney can new scenes to their animated movies (think like the DVD release of The Lion King adding in the "Morning Report" song sequence or the DVD release of Beauty and the Beast adding in the "Human Again" song sequence) is because Disney is an all-in-one media production company unto itself, with its own animation, music, and voice production studios all under its belt.

The 1986 Transformers movie, however, was produced by two dead production companies who didn't keep all of their production assets (as evidenced by how fans have had to track down all the behind-the-scenes materials themselves over the decades), and who didn't animate any extra scenes that were cut from the movie besides one extended camera panning shot that follows after Astrotrain's departure from Autobot City. The animation itself was outsourced to Toei, not done in-house like Disney's animated films are.

So, in order for there to be new scenes added to the movie, Hasbro would have to reach out to some production company and pay them to recreate the original animation assets of the movie from the ground up, commission the creation of new scenes using those assets, and, if Toei were to be involved for true authenticity, outsource the actual animation work to them. And all of this would be on top of needing the first production company to take those new scenes (which would likely be created digitally in this day and age in contrast how the rest of the movie was made) and edit them back into the movie as seamlessly as possible, which would also require an editing of the score and soundtrack to accommodate the new scenes slotted into the picture. This in turn would also likely require new music compositions, be they completely new tracks to modified versions of the original score. For true authenticity, this would require reaching to Vince DiCola and commissioning new music work from him.

The more and more all this goes on, the more and more money all this is going to cost. At that point, with all these extra expenses, it begs the question from an executive corporate perspective if going to such expenses for a few measly minutes of more runtime is really all that worth it for a movie that they know they can already make plenty of money on as is, without adding any new footage, since TF fans will just eat up the newest release of the movie like the cattle we all are.

I don't really see anyone clamoring for any of those "authenticity" bells and whistles. Phazer even made it clear that the very idea (even without any of the conditions of bringing in Toei and DiCola and whatever else that came from Primus knows whose ass) was so unlikely as to just not happen.

But let's not infantilize the multinational corporation here. Hasbro isn't some rando in a garage wanting to whip up a tribute to a favorite movie. They've thrown a lot of promotion work into this, from lining up a slate of retools and redecos built around pushing it, to designing and producing an entirely new roleplay Matrix of Leadership, to commissioning bands to cover songs from the soundtrack, to setting up screenings. It likely won't be some overblown thing as fans are wont to concoct and anticipate, but it won't be a series of scribbled-together stick figures on table napkins either.

Nonsense, all we have to do is go to that alternate universe where our first Optimus Prime was the MP-01 version, then use our beta tape deck to record the movie version where Optimus crumbles to dust. Then we will take that beta tape and convert it to laserdisk because everyone knows that laserdisk never wears out, and we will use it to bring back the lost footage that was kept in a vault behind the G1 Skyfire toy and gigantic Predaking we all clearly remember for sale next to Unicron at Roses.

... I mean there was a reason I said the chances of it happening was zero.
To clarify, my post wasn't directed mainly at yours. My post was meant to be more of a general one. Yours just reminded me of how, every once in a while, we get those people asking for an extended cut of the movie as if it's something that could be easily done with enough Petition.com donations.

I think the real trouble with that is the 'outtakes' from Thundercats and such were actually recorded and then saved, put over animation by fans later. A lot of people seem to think that's common for all shows, they don't realize it was VERY unusual and why those outtakes became internet famous before 'viral' was a thing. If there were any outtakes or the like from TF the Movie, they are likely in a landfill somewhere. Keeping anything but the completed product was not common practice for a long time, and even with that, keeping the FINISHED product was sometimes not seen as important. Look how many episodes of Dr. Who exist audio only, if they exist at all. The BBC didn't archive, for a long time. They saw no need.

I'm not saying it's likely that they'll animate, voice and edit in deleted scenes. I'm saying it's the only thing that'd get me to care about these Xth Anniversaries. Might be my line of work but I'm not easily impressed by old things getting older.

I mean let's be real there is a non-zero chance Hasbro would resort to some AI slop 'extended cut' if they thought it'd make some money.
Beat me to it.

Anyway, I'm not sure if there's really any place better to put this, but my wife and I attended yesterday's "Transformers Day" at the Toronto Blue Jays game, and this is my story:

You know what's a bummer? The coolest thing about Unicron is that you didn't know he could transform; he was just basically a planet-munching death star and then, oh jive, one of the coolest animated scenes of the movie and 'is that a fist' and then your realize he's a planet sized transformer. It's an impressive moment, brought together with fantastic animation and music. But it's kind of surprise you only get to do once.

When Unicron shows up now, you know he's a giant transformer now, even if he doesn't transform. (I'm really curious how a sequel to the last knight would have played out...) So without that surprise, he's just a bigger, badder villain regardless of whatever mythology they dream up for him.

My introduction to Unicron was as a head orbiting Cybertron, so I kinda had an inkling about that.

Like when the characters are on model they're fine, but when they aren't? Woof. There's a bit in divide and conquer (I think) where in one shot Bumblebee has full on bull horns and then in the next shot he's in, they've become tiny little spikes.

I think trying to remaster this would be a colossal waste of time.

Also, nothing will ever be as funny as the Autobots holding a funeral for Skyfire and then two episodes later going "Aw hell, we need a ride to Peru" and then digging Skyfire out of the ice... Y'all couldn't have done that instead of holding a funeral? :D
For your ilk it's just flat out impossible to not be cynical, isn't it?

The show should absolutely get a remaster. There's ton of issues with what's being distributed now, from pre-final takes littering season 1, to sloppy colour correction that need to be rectified. YOU may not like the show, but lot's of people do and it's goddamn tiresome to see it being used as a punching bag by likes of you.

1. My "ilk?" Can you please tell me what my "ilk" is exactly? Just so I have an idea of what kind of arbitrary category of fan you've decided I belong to. :D Who, pray tell, ARE the likes of me? :)
2. Never said I didn't like the show; I said it was incredibly ugly at times and there's enough wrong with it that remastering it would be a wasted effort. To be more specific, there's enough wrong and broken with that show that I believe simple remaster would be pointless, contrary to my initial thoughts on the matter; you'd have to fundamentally redraw vast swaths of it just for the problem parts, and then likely redrawn even more to make it all feel contiguous, and at some point it just makes more sense to put that effort into something new rather than trying to make an old cartoon not feel like an old cartoon.
