It looks like Legacy to me. It's obviously not G1, but for me it's now on the same level as something like the Unicron Trilogy. It's still its own thing. It's a different direction. Just not a whole different universe. Divergent evolution vs an alien.

i love the animated aesthetic to pieces but i totally admit the hybrid aesthetic legacy TFA prime is going for is kinda my ideal TF aesthetic. dynamic lines and proportions like animated, but with added details and a bit more anime-ish.

honestly, he kinda looks like what i think a TF cartoon done by studio trigger would look like.

There is some speculation about this Prime at some point getting released as a Leader with armor pieces like the abandoned season 4 design. I don't know if they are planning on doing that, but if they decide to do it at some point, this thing does have ports in all the right places to make it easy.

I liked the Animated show. I thought that some of the characters were well thought-out, and the actual stories were good. However, I really didn't warm up to the designs and as a result, did not seek out the toys. It's cool that they are referencing this period in TF history for the new line, but I am not in a hurry to buy updates of toys that I didn't like to begin with.

Animated leader Megatron is a pretty cool figure, it was certainly the best of the Megatrons and still stands as the best leader class Megatron from before they seriously were focused on scale!

It just occurred to me that not only do the feet have the necessary ports for super mode boots, but the weird new leg transformation places those ports right where the super bits would need a place to attach in vehicle mode.

Um, Animated OP never got a height boost, he got a pair of gloves to aid wielding the Magnus hammer and a jetpack with wings, that's it, animated went a different route compared to the previous Optimus prime toys and character

They're talking about the Season 4 design that never came about, not the Season 3 winged design.

That sounds like the kind of "speculation" that amounts to "this would be cool, and since Hasbro has been doing unlikely-sounding things, every cool thing is probably happening."

I'm curious if there might be any potential backwards-compatibility with this figure and the upgrade parts that came with the Takara figure. Normally I wouldn't think so, but they made Commander class Armada Optimus backwards-compatible with the original Armada Overload, so who knows?

The gauntlets might be possible to fit onto the arms since they were just attached by 5mm pegs slotted into the fist holes. The winged backpack, however, is a bigger mystery.

The Gauntlets are a maybe but the wings, I doult it, because that connected on by OP's light bar and from what I can see, looking at the pictures, there doesn't appear to be a means to connect the wings to him, but then Hasbro & Takara might be planning to release a remold further down the line where OP comes with modern verisons of the upgrade and likely a alterative head where he has the face plate and likely a more shiny paint deco!

I do kind of hope with these animated style in legacy, they try and do Shockwave from animated, the original is still awesome to this day and it would present the desginers a challange as they got to do, two robot modes and two vehicle modes, all as one figure, animated Shockwave is one of my favourte figures from that line, he such a AWESOME figure and as Shockwave, he towers above pretty much every modern voyager class and leader figure, thou he shorter than commander class Jetfire, but then Jetfire is a big fella to start with, thou I would also like for Legacy to try their hand at a modern RID2001 Megatron/Galvatron, having all ten modes, as it stands, that is the figure with the most modes in a single figure and its a unbroken record for over twenty years now!!

I think it's very unlikely that this was designed for backwards compatibility with a set Hasbro never released. At least Hasbro released an Overload.

As for how a new set of wings would attach, the light bar does have a port. But better yet, the whole light bar is removable. The wings could just peg directly to this toy's back.

The armor stuff might also be too big for a contemporary Voyager. I mean, yeah, technically the wingblade parts were designed to be compatible with the deluxe Animated Optimus too but they were clearly too big to fit the smaller figure.

I never could figure out how to get the wing backpack on the Deluxe figure.

That’s what I was thinking when that idea was first mentioned. I feel like, if Hasbro is going to dip into the well of unmade designs, there are PLENTY more compelling than the Animated Powermaster concept. Everything from Transtech, to unmade show characters (especially RiD15’s Decepticons), to even more obscure like the designs intended for Transformers Heroes (before it became Animated).

But like I said before, the wingblade parts could easily be incorporated into some sort of con/Selects/Fan Channel/not general retail release. Anything more would put the budget into the territory of “might as well make something that might have broader appeal”.

Worst case scenario, someone like DNA Design makes an upgrade kit containing the wing pack, gauntlets, and hammer. But it is always preferable that those come from Hasbro instead.
