Actually managed to check on this after having forgotten about it due to a busy week.

The upper and lower jaws were indeed stuck together at a few points, but I was able to carefully wedge a fingernail, then a small screwdriver, into the gap near where the halves met, and carefully lever it open. I stress "carefully", because the next thing that happened was one of the hinge parts on the upper jaw cracked, as that was a weaker point than the inseparable jaws. So I guess now there's an excuse to just leave the damn thing stuck shut.

For all that many of the TR designs hold up (ranging from the meh in Chromedome to the solid in Hardhead to the unexpectedly great in the Triggerhappy mold-sharers and the Jumpstarters), these Headmaster beasts feel like a sick prank. Especially since so, SO little of the rubbery plastic even seemed necessary given the apparent needs of the designs and comparable other pieces. I won't say no to de-Headmastered takes for some if and when they revisit this clutch of characters, but if anyone's getting remade, these painfully compromised designs need to get first dibs.

I wonder if it's worth tracking down the upsized Wei Jiang version. I think it avoids the rubbery plastic (hard to find proper text reviews these days), but then their Mindwipe has all the same rubbery plastic problems. And the tradeoff of this lone dude being weirdly out of scale is off-putting enough.
I've always viewed the Headmaster Beasts as suffering from "early wave" syndrome, where they were the obvious first offerings and so were made before the team had settled into a solid groove with the line.

By the time we got to the standouts you mentioned, they'd worked out the kinks in the line.

I just checked mine and the jaws weren't stuck at all. Not even a little sticky.

All my Retro Headmasters were doing fine last I handled them, which I think was earlier this year. It makes me wonder though. We have pages on the wiki covering stuff like GPS and photodegradation, both of which do a commendable job of cataloging figures that are known to have the issue. Has there been any attempt to similarly catalog figures prone to melty soft plastic? Or clear plastic breakages, for that matter? Reading fandom discussions could easily make you think that every figure with soft plastic or clear plastic is doomed to failure. But just like there are numerous figures with gold plastic that isn't subject to GPS, or how only certain figures are prone to discoloration, there are many figures with soft plastic and/or clear plastic that have no real QC issues. It would be nice to have a reference for what figures actually do have such issues.

So I tried to put Monstructor together the other day. Unfortunately, I got a misassembly on my left foot. It has a right foot plate so I can't put the foot on correctly. Contacted Hasbro and got told 'you didn't buy from an authorized place so you're SOL'. Contacted 1313 and we'll see what happens.

I'm kind of pissed at Hasbro over this. It's a manufacturing error, not a store error. Just ship me a hugging foot.

Well, if we're listing them...

I've got some clear plastic breakage on my TFCC Breakaway. And the only major issue that I've seen with rubbery plastic is with the Protectobot First Aid done from the Prime Ratchet tooling - one knee has cleanly popped off. Neither is a big issue, thankfully, but the latter is kinda annoying.

Damn, that sucks; sorry to hear that happened. I am really looking forward to getting AoTP Monstructor, but just got the requisite email from Pulse:

Your order is almost ready to ship, but unfortunately we ran into a problem when trying to process your payment method. If you don't resolve this issue within 5 days, we'll have to cancel your order.

It's like every 5th order or so, we do this little "payment failure" dance. Hasbro makes some fine products but the website (at least the payment section) really lets them down. Wish I had ordered through BBTS for this one.

I am a bit irritated that the mix of clear (cracks started around the doors) and rubber ( backpack hoses started eating paint) is why I don't have the Ghostbusters Transformers anymore. And if I get the Mystery Machine at any point they will be doubly missed. But I got so irritated at the constant need to shift the hoses to prevent damage and still wound up with melt dents on two of the three, I finally gave up.

Of course, even if we add in later combiners like Volcanicus and Victorion, the Bots are destined to be outnumbered anyway.

Ironic, when you think about it.

Does this mean the Decepticons are better at teamwork than the Autobots?

Given how some of the Decepticon combiners have turned out (i.e. dumb as bricks) it may more be the case that the Decepticons are willing to make them out of teams that don't get along well with each other. Any team of 5-6 idiots will do, Megatron just wants them for destroying stuff anyway.
Computron is really a deconstruction IMO.

Five smart, reasonably well-adjusted individuals merge to form Mr. Analysis Paralysis.

And Predaking is probably the best-case scenario for this kind of thing.

Crap like that is part of the reason I've been using PayPal with Pulse. And relying more on BBTS.

I had an odd thought, as I get closer to finally assembling a Bruticus like I've been trying since TF Energon...back then, Fansproject made an Explorer and Munitioner set of figures that were basically Swindle, Blast-off, and a lot of extra parts that stuck onto the Deluxe central body to bulk out Onslaught. Cut to 22 years later, and the way the frame system works here is almost the same thing except it comes like that out of the box. I just thought it was funny how my old attempt that never worked finally caught up with me (I was never able to get the add-ons, I wound up improvising with one of the warthog like planes and the yellow dozer to make my version without having to repeat molds, like you can see in the old 'MS Paint and bad digital camera' era of dumb comics).
