My point was mainly that "by the time I decide I want a combiner" shouldn't be a metric Hasbro follows for planning out its releases and lines. I went through an annoying time tracking down the Stunticons. But that's not on them; I saw those individual figures (even Breakdown, even the Breakdown reissue) and even the box set, multiple times -- and stayed on the fence until it was too late to get them conveniently and without the Late Tax. As, sadly, is my wont. I shifted plans partway through AOTP and managed to still find the first two Aerialbots, but if I'd waited until later and suffered again, that's not something I can blame on the combiner being incentivized or not.

Anyway, even the timing for Combiners isn't what I'd call terrible; it seems to have hit a decent pace, helped along by Studio Series being an ongoing long runner and AOTP seeming to be an unusually long line of its own. But I suppose that's predicated on considering a year a decent timeframe, which I feel is justified; these aren't Blokees.

Superion could be completed three waves into the line because the Deluxes went out in pairs. The Constructicons knocked all six out in the same calendar year as well, pretty impressive for SIX figures across multiple price points. These two teams were the most efficiently completed ones. The Stunticons ran across (heh) two lines, but only because Legacy was shorter (Breakdown would've been in wave 4 if that line had one). The Combaticons have felt much the most "piecemeal" of the G1 combiners so far, only showing up in even-numbered waves (Vortex in wave 2, Blast Off and Brawl both in wave 4) and shunting Onslaught and Swindle closer to the end of the line. I think this may have been complicated by two Combaticons being Voyagers. The G2 Stunticons, as you say, have had the worst of it -- I wonder if the final parts were meant to round out the Toxitron Collection and got axed (forcing a search for a new outlet). These seemed to mostly be capsule fodder, probably due to the anticipated lower demand making them make more sense for that niche (the G2 and other box sets from Prime Wars didn't do too well, iirc).

I don't think the combiners need incentivizing -- they're clearly being spread out as tentpoles for the waves, and along with the Thirteen make up the main attractions of the line.

Interestingly, there does seem to be some "disincentivizing". But more than in the scattering-across-waves, I see it in the somewhat counterintuitive downplaying of the combination aspect in terms of packaging callouts. Members do all have "# of 5/6" notation, but the limbs don't visually show the combination off (even wordlessly to avoid having to allocate space for translations). I think someone theorized (or someone on the team mentioned) that this was to avoid people going "I'll never find the other 4, might as well skip this one". While that may partly speak to sprinkling the parts across waves, it can also speak to the perennial distribution woes that toylines run into (which in the past was a factor in Hasbro avoiding combiners).

We're not likely to get a line that drops entire combiner teams in one go unless combiner-ing is the whole focus of the line. And even Combiner Wars took a few mixed waved before having waves that were all Protectobots and all Combaticons (and, uh, all Autobots to go with Prime). (POTP also shuffled three combiner teams in mixes across two waves each, but that line was a mess of "let's clear the decks before the reboot" anyway.)

Box sets seem like the obvious way to go, but they've only done one (maybe two, although the Devastator one was a Hasbro China event thing iirc) so far. And typically only after the individual toys have been released piecemeal.

Most teams release in a timely manner and even have rereleases to make completing them easier. Mostly, the teams I see that drag their feet are the post-S3 teams that to be blunt, should be thankful they're getting anything at all.

Part of me is in no hurry to get new ones of those, as Computron and Piranacon turned out nice. Although I would be tempted to give up the former for a better done Nosecone in the toy colors.

I hope Predaking is next, before Defensor. Partly because I need one that went to the downsizing/rescaling clinic Devastator went to, and partly because I want to find out whether they can Pride Rock the combiner frame for Razorclaw.

Or maybe they change up how the frame works, with only the upper body having it. Divebomb could be the Commander class figure: upper body frame is attached to the wing pack, combining with a Deluxe arm/bot to turn into a vast predatory bird. Rampage, also Deluxe to match. Voyager or Leader Razorclaw, who would now mostly form the lower torso and waist. Tantrum and Headstrong at a Voyager or Leader class and done POTP style, with leg pieces and boot boom boxes. (This is more or less POTP with a frame situation for the upper body, lol. That was a decent design; I just disagreed with the proportions and especially the odd lower torso extension.)

I hope for an Autobot combiner because we're now three Decepticon teams in (four if we count Liokaiser or Monstructor, five if we count both) to just Superion.

Of course, even if we add in later combiners like Volcanicus and Victorion, the Bots are destined to be outnumbered anyway.

I would love for the next team to be an Autobot combiner, too, and it feels like Defensor would be the logical choice. I would like a Predaking at some point, too. However, I really, really, really (can't stress this enough) feel that he should be larger than the current crop of combiners. I never warmed up to the PotP set, and I'm not saying it has to be that big; just anything noticeably larger would be nice.

I guess the original toy, and that one poster where he's absolutely bodying the other combiners. And there's something about a visibly big beastly killing machine...

Don't really need that myself; I'd prefer something analogous in size to the rest. Maybe chonky for his height, but the extent of the disparity from POTP is what I'm trying to get away from.

Protectobots would put them halfway to the Torchbearers too. They could even use Vortex for one arm and Blades for the other to add some variety to the team. Yes, I'm sure Blades will be a remold of Vortex, but given the current commitment to toon accuracy, he's sure to get enough remolding to be distinct.

They sure did. Hated it then, too.

Good discussion. We're definitely not in agreement, but I see no point in belaboring the point further. You've been more than fair.

Predaking has always been the biggest, baddest combiner. They have a great vibe, and I appreciated the original toys were around the same size as the Dinobots. That said, POTP Predaking was a bit stretched out proportionately to make him taller, and I'd be happy with a smaller version, as long as the limbs were still voyagers. A frame system might just do the trick to avoid having to make Razorclaw bigger than Rampage, too, and maybe even help prevent the wings from looking too small.

Great, one more thing to check on.
Actually managed to check on this after having forgotten about it due to a busy week.

The upper and lower jaws were indeed stuck together at a few points, but I was able to carefully wedge a fingernail, then a small screwdriver, into the gap near where the halves met, and carefully lever it open. I stress "carefully", because the next thing that happened was one of the hinge parts on the upper jaw cracked, as that was a weaker point than the inseparable jaws. So I guess now there's an excuse to just leave the damn thing stuck shut.

For all that many of the TR designs hold up (ranging from the meh in Chromedome to the solid in Hardhead to the unexpectedly great in the Triggerhappy mold-sharers and the Jumpstarters), these Headmaster beasts feel like a sick prank. Especially since so, SO little of the rubbery plastic even seemed necessary given the apparent needs of the designs and comparable other pieces. I won't say no to de-Headmastered takes for some if and when they revisit this clutch of characters, but if anyone's getting remade, these painfully compromised designs need to get first dibs.

I wonder if it's worth tracking down the upsized Wei Jiang version. I think it avoids the rubbery plastic (hard to find proper text reviews these days), but then their Mindwipe has all the same rubbery plastic problems. And the tradeoff of this lone dude being weirdly out of scale is off-putting enough.
