Why is this so?

Classic Doctor Who stories, even in places which claim to have EVERYTHING, don't have everything. No "An Unearthly Child" due to the kid of the original writer having a dispute with the BBC, for example. Said story, however, is available on DVD, and will eventually be available on Blu-Ray, and I doubt very much that they can simply walk up to my front door and take the DVDs from me. Thus, I can watch the story whenever I please.

"The Crushing Inevitability of the Daleks" is too real.
True -- though Chibnall's Dalek stories, at least, were generally considered high points of that era.

And one fan with a ring modulator of his own made them stand out even more.

Russel T. Davies and Bad Wolf Productions are out. BBC has sent the show to tender, which is a process where other companies can bid on working on the show. So the Christmas Special is officially cancelled for this year and it may be a while before we get more Doctor Who. (They have other Who Projects in the works They are referring to this particular show)

I've got mixed feelings about this. I just hope the next writers can be better than the last. I've no problem with any of the content from the previous writers, but it lacked cohesion and coherence, IMO...

The current rumour is that no actor wants to play the Doctor at the moment as its seen as a toxic role due to all of the resent stupidly that's gone into the show and surrounding it so the special getting cancelled doesn't surprise me in the slightest as this is Karma for the stupidly!

Who going fully back into hibernation for a bit isn't exactly the worst thing. As long as it's not another 20 years(which it sounds like it won't be) before the next...

And doing that now means they can use whatever the next special ends up being to jumpstart things from wherever they want, rather than continuing off the current status quo from the Christmas one and possibly leaving it dangling(or ending up with a one-episode Doctor regeneration), since regenerations provide a perfect transition to new approaches or setups, and that's what we left off on.

With Davies gone, I wonder if that means we can get Christopher Eccleston back?

However, I am sad that we aren't getting a Christmas special this year.

Russel T. Davies was THE guy to revive Doctor Who in 2005, and his first run was pretty great... but as much as I hate to admit it, I do think his return showed he's lost his fastball. Which isn't a knock on him, it happens to everyone eventually. Still, I think it's clear that a reset is what's needed.

I can't say that I'm surprised that this is happening. I'm not happy that it's happening, but I'm not surprised.

Doctor Who needs to grow. It needs to change and evolve and adjust. It also needs good stories and good storytelling more than anything. It...and I'd argue the wider media landscape...needs fewer people who will crap on something just to crap on it. Legitimate criticism is one thing, but "I don't like it because the Doctor's a woman/black/LGBTQ+/crybaby!" is not a valid reason to bitch about the show.

There were stories from RTD's first era that I enjoyed, and stories that I didn't enjoy. Same with Moffat. Chibnall? Most of his era I am ambivalent about, though I sincerely hope the Timeless Child wasn't done "Because I can." And I can't really judge RTD's second era, as I haven't watched it beyond the one with the babies, but I know there were bits that people liked, bits that people didn't like (from what I hear, I'd have definitely done Omega differently), and bits that they had legitimate criticism about.

We need new blood.

RTD? Fan of classic Who who nurtured fan theories and ideas about the mythos and what he'd do if he got to do his own stories. Got a chance to be in charge of the actual show.

Moffat? Fan of classic Who who nurtured fan theories and ideas about the mythos and what he'd do if he got to do his own stories. Got a chance to be in charge of the actual show.

Chibnall? Fan of classic Who who nurtured fan theories and ideas about the mythos and what he'd do if he got to do his own stories. Got a chance to be in charge of the actual show.

RTD again? Fan of classic Who who nurtured fan theories and ideas about the mythos and what he'd do if he got to do his own stories. Got a chance to be in charge of the actual show.

And on top of that Moffat and Chibnall worked with RTD the first time when he was putting together the revived Who writing team. We don't just need new people outside of these three, we need people who aren't all basically from the same era and fan community who were passing around the same fan theories and fanfics for twenty years.

Honestly? It may be time to either get someone whose first exposure to Who was from 2005 onward or? Wild ideas... someone who knows the franchise but isn't a deep in the weeds fan of it. Tony Gilroy showed what can happen if you get a good writer who isn't beholden to all the deep lore and fandom and put him in charge of a show in a big IP. Doctor Who may need some of that energy.
