I felt like this was going to be Marvels PG-13 Suicide Squad attempt going in.
I thought Suicide Squad was DC's attempt at a Guardians of the Galaxy?

Suicide Squad 2016 ended up cut to pieces in a sad attempt to remake it into a an unholy fusion of Guardians of the Galaxy and Deadpool after it was already finished.

Shame of it is that it may have been good as originally intended but nah... we'll never know.

Suicide Squad 2021 however was directed by the Guardians of the Galaxy guy and made an R... and it seems to have been much more critically acclaimed.

So it's a real dogs chasing each other in circles situation. The original SS was chasing Marvel movies before the sequel decided to just do its own thing, and now Marvel is gonna try and copy that.

That James Gunn is intimately involved in both sides of this doesn't help.

Man, I hope Superman is good.

I hope Superman is good too. I'm not actually wild about Gunn's writing always focusing on found family as a theme.

I see news that they're changing posters in the USA that spoil Thunderbolts. That kinda bites. But I guess it WOULD draw people in to watching it, which would be a good thing because it is worth watching.

How long before we can discuss stuff without spoiler tags?

Saw Thunderbolts* yesterday, and immensely enjoyed it. Florence Pugh killed it (Yelena), but she does that in almost everything she's in, so no shock there, and it's always great to see her. David Harbour (Red Guardian) was an absolute treat, which I absolutely expected from the trailers, and he definitely delivered. I also really enjoyed Sebastian Stan, Hannah John-Kamen, Wyatt Russell, Geraldine Viswanathan, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. They were all great.

However, the surprise standout for me was Lewis Pullman (Bob), who was pitch-perfect at every point. Bob resonated with me in a way that is very uncommon in superhero fare, and in a way I had not really experienced since Avengers: Endgame, but it did so with more depth and maturity, and as such it did a much better job in that regard.

Overall, I loved it and can't recommend it highly enough.

The part that put a lump in my throat was
where were you, dad? I thought you didn't want me around. Of course, I wanted you around, you're my father.
I forget the actual words but I think it's the first time it was admitted. He wanted it so much but it wasn't even real and there was resistance. It was a touching follow up from the lead in movie.

Yelena's breakdown was the part that first broke me as well. Like the whole last 30 minutes was just me and my partner clutching hands and crying - but that's the part that hit me the hardest. That's twice a Florence Pugh scene has made me cry in movies I wasn't expecting it to. (Other was Puss in Boots: The Last Wish)

I wanted to go see this for my birthday, but the state of things is... making it unlikely. =\

Screw me! I looked at some comments from videos and, gosh dang, there's a missed comic reference!

The
name of de Fontaine's awesome assistant is Mel! Her supposed full name is Melissa Gold! That's the name of Songbird, one of the original comic Thunderbolts! She was basically another Thunderbolt in the movie! Holy cow!!! I collected Thunderbolts from Buseik to Nicieza's run and Songbird is one of my faves (next to Fixer. And Meteorite Moonstone. And Mach-1234) so that's so freaking cool!!!
