I implore you to actually look at his "drug test" results. Just look. If you do, you'll see one of the things they supposidly tested him for was ecstasy. And you'd think, ok yeah they'd test for that. Cept for one little problem.

The tech will be ready some day, but it's foolish to put these things on public roads until it is. The mistakes that his cars are making are not edge cases and should easily be found by running tests on closed courses and simulations but investors want a return and Musk wants bragging rights.
The biggest issue with self-driving cars isn't that they're less safe than human drivers—that's not exactly a high bar to clear in this country—but that if their manufacturers refuse to accept liability for the accidents that do happen, no one is going to want to share the road with even one of them for the same reason no one wants to share the road with people who are uninsured. And I'm not sure they can ever be made reliable enough that manufacturers will accept liability. Mandate it by law, and what you'll more likely see is every company not just patching the feature out of their cars immediately, but permanently shutting down the department involved in its development. Then secretly sponsoring op-eds about how "self-driving cars were never going to work."
I do see a future for self-driving cars. But it involves doing something that nobody in government wants to do.

Seriously, these things shouldn't be trying to calculate where other human drivers are. They should be asking the road where everybody is and going from there. But that would require actually investing in infrastructure the likes of which we haven't seen since the days of the Great Depression. And that won't happen because every politician will want to line something like that with as much juicy pork as they can.
