Yeah, I guess that's the other thing here: Is the fact that Grok is able to do this proof that someone fed it actual child porn as part of its training data? There absolutely needs to be an investigation into that. Even if it's something as simple as the scraper stumbling across it on some dark corner of the internet (not necessarily the dark web; sometimes trolls will post it on public websites with poor moderation to try to get them shut down for having poor moderation; ask me how I know this), it would mean the whole data set is compromised and should be grounds to mandate having the whole thing wiped.

I say "should be" because that would require having an actual functioning government, which I don't believe we've had for a few administrations now and likely won't ever have again in my lifetime.

Ah. And by definition all AI can do is alter, even if it alters them by blending them all into a soup which comes out looking like no one recognizable. Every photo an AI produces is technically a deepfake of every single person whose photos are in its training data.

Anyone looking to file a class action suit against an extremely wealthy company, take note.

Heavily paywalled so can't link the article, but the headline's not wrong, really.

Good luck. I'm sure Elon is just aware enough to understand that the majority of usage is the porn. He doesn't want to lose those eyes and engagement so he can't just out and out ban porn requests. Because, at the end of the day, the right thing to do is just not something he understands.

That said, I can see X getting sued not only by celebs who really don't like being faked in the nude, much less in hardcore positions, but by agencies dealing with the simulated child porn that is being churned out.
This also is a blow to Trump and his admin's push to have no AI legislation for a decade. It's hard to make the argument in the face of kiddie porn generators. People tend to get real . . . . hugging pissed the hell off about such things.

wonko the sane?

You may test that assumption at your convinience.

I can also see the porn studios suing him, I don't know what reason they would actually use, but it would be over turf rights.

Studios won't, but individual performers can and will. Softcore actresses being depicted doing hardcore or worse. Easy enough to demonstrate harm and loss of income.

To no one's surprise, it did not help. Looks like the article's been updated that it hasn't stopped the process at all.

It's just one Florida Congresswoman so far, but don't be surprised if this gets some White House backing. Trump and Musk have patched things up, somehow.

Trump NEEDS Musk to run interference for the midterms and Musk NEEDS Trump so his companies can keep getting handouts from the US Government and to keep the DoJ and FTC off his back.

A ban on anything capable of making deepfakes would, in effect, be a ban on all generative AI, so no I think this is exactly as strong as the legislation should be.

I think just on the photoshop-like uses of it.

This is still the case about people making AI alterations of specific images that they provided (without having a legal right to use that way).

I mean, at least if the subject is a celebrity, it probably is possible to have an "AI" make a deepfake using only a text prompt, but this legislation doesn't seem to cover that.

Okay, so how do you prove you have legal right to alter an image? What safeguards do you put in to prevent abuse?

Exactly. When people use AI, they're not actually doing anything they might have the legal right to do; they're giving instructions to a soulless machine that has no legal rights and the machine is doing all the work. The user should absolutely be liable the same way a dog's owner would if they command it to attack someone, but AI is something simultaneously less than human and more than a mere tool and its own creators don't even understand it and that's what's so dangerous about it. And, hell, we already restrict what tools people can be legally allowed access to, between gun control laws and driver's licenses and international treaties that forbid entire nations from enriching uranium.

Tesla is going to discontinue production on the Model X and S vehicles and pivot the factories to producing the Optimus robot:
I will be fascinated to see how that works out for them.
