In the build up to next week’s Walmart Collector’s Con, it seems Jakks Pacific is getting in on the Metroid 4 hype by previewing some new Metroid releases in their Nintendo Toy Line:
First up is a new UV light up Metroid, the first large scale Metroid (6”) toy they’ve produced in YEARS-

To go with the big momma Metroid, they’re going to offer a 3 pack of 2 old 2.5” Metroid figurines and a “Prime” styled flavor Samus-

Less exciting is the Chozo Armor 3 pack, featuring the old Samus Aran 2.5” figurine mold rereleased in its 3 variant colors (Phazon, Varia, Gravity)-

For those looking for a 4”-ish Samus, she IS in circulation with Nintendo Core character assortment. A new mold was introduced in 2023 and I’ve seen the Gravity Suit flavor just last year And the Phazon variant earlier this year.

So...uhhh...Nintendo just dropped this...

No one knows what this is. Or what it may be teasing. Mother 4? Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa 2? Some sort of Pikmin spinoff? A Nintendo-branded baby monitor app for smartphones?

But, let the "Nintendo is for babies" jokes start...now!

If it is, it doesn't make any sense. They show a handful of objects seemingly moving around by themselves, but only a handful, and one takes focus for most of it. Conservation of detail is being blown right out the window. Also the pacifier jumps when the baby hits the chair, like it's being carried by something invisible. Also, it's been pointed out that in the background of one shot you can see something moving under the bed, out of focus. This is a teaser for something, all right, something about small invisible beings. Possibly Pikmin if Pikmin Bloom is canon.

Arlo's already done a video on it:

If you had guessed "Pikmin" you were correct!

There's a new version of the video with the Pikmin visible on Nintendo's app. Hopefully it gets mirrored onto Youtube at some point.

I don't know, this almost feels like the "boring" option. No shade to Pikmin, but it doesn't feel like the most exciting or interesting subject for...whatever this may be teasing? A movie or a series of shorts? Or maybe it was just a one-off? And it kind of "ruins" the whole post-apocalyptic fan-theory that was kind of interesting, even if it was highly unlikely.

...Plus, c'mon, that baby TOTALLY had Lucas's hair! And the pacifier and other objects moving around could have been burgeoning psychic powers! It even had a mom! A Earthbound/Mother sequel (or even a collection or remake) tease was RIGHT THERE!

Fortunately Nintendo now has Splatoon to take up the mantle of "silly cartoony game secretly set on post-apocalyptic Earth." They don't need two of them.

Why, in all that is sane, does a METROID GAME have ESCORT missions in the year of our lord, 2025?! Not only that, but Nintendo’s own trailer revealed we’ll end up with a whole gaggle of chatty cattys through the course of the game.

One part of me suspects that, due to the nature of the characters and some of the game design, if Retro didn’t get brought in to salvage what BN had already worked on. As is, I got the feeling that MP Remastered in 2023 was at least partly the result of technological work being done on Prime 4. Given the scope of projects like Prime, I’m wondering if Retro wasn’t trying to salvage as much as they could of the prior version to speed up development time.

While I’m not about to even pretend to have played much of Prime 3 (stupid waggle…), the speaking characters and much of the visual language I’m seeing in the zones feels a bit more “Japanese” than in prior Prime titles (from my, admittedly limited, experience).

Fixed that for you. ;)

Real talk, though: Prime's always been the wilder, experimental branch of the brand. Under that banner, we got parallel dimensions, working with other Hunters across numerous planets, playing as other characters, pinball, death matches, squad-based combat, soccer, and just taking things in a first-person direction to begin with.

This seems positively benign compared to most of those, at least to me.
