Star Trek General Discussion

Anything Kurtzman gets a lot of hate from certain sectors, whether it deserves it or not.

Personally, ep 1 was middle of the road for me. I like the captain/chancellor, the Doctor is good as always, the Klingon student seems intriguing, but the show gives a feeling it's more going to be focused around that one student than an ensemble show, ala early DIscovery, and I don't vibe with this protag as much as I did Burnham. Not enough to go out of my way to watch it anyways.

My friend watched the first episode (not ep2 or 3) and we posted a video. My friend was pretty positive about the ep. There was a negative comment all of a sudden, saying the show will fail.

Checking YouTube, there's a bunch of negative takes on it. Was it really taken that badly?
Someone in that video looks familiar...

I started watching EP 3 and turned it off. I get that everything changes and evolves with the time, and I have zero issue with profanity, I use it more than most people I know. BUT...it feels so out of place in Star Trek, even if it is centered around a young cast that have not grown into the polished officers and enlisted we are used to seeing in Star Trek.

I honestly haven't noticed swearing. Not saying it's not there, just that it hasn't stood out in any way that registered to me at all. Ep 3 was a lot of fun with the Mascot Laser Tag and pranks.

-ZacWilliam, that might have been my favorite so far fun wise, although the Bejoran episode was very "Star Trek" feeling in its plot and resolution.

I thought the Jem "Truly Outrageous" Hadar officer kept saying the f-word at the start of the first episode.

At 55 secs in, I thought she first said "...f**k chancellor..." and everyone else who said her name later on said the same naughty word...

The main one that stood out to me in episode one was the "I'm chionian, b___" part, though the callback later in the ep was admittedly kinda fun. It just felt modern rather than Trek, if that makes any sense.
Man, I hated that Khionian, b---- part, ugh. But, well, I wouldn't complain if the Klingon's would say their Klingon swear words. It's just the throwback Earth swear words are... dated?

Jem Truly Outrageous! Haha! It was Thuk! But now I'll imagine it as the other one, haha

Saw ep4 A Voice on High. I thought Vox in Excelso was a Voice of Excellence but I guess not.

Good focus ep, not saying spoilers, but I HATE one dumb joke made there. I don't think Quark or Lower Deckers ever stooped that low. Dumb, dirty, immature joke that doesn't fit the future framework, in my head. Maybe I'm a prude, haha

I think the patterns is semi action ep, then talky ep (Betazoids), then semi action ep (the sports), then talky ep. But they easily could have put more action here.

The curly haired student feels Chekov ish to me.

This one I liked. Not for sure whether the Klingons accepted charity because it was offered with respectful deniability or if they've just gotten so raggedy that they couldn't tell.

Oh the Klingons accepting it, they did. Supposedly, the father missing the bird on purpose was him accepting Jay-Den and the parallel was in the ending fight, where everybody was missing on purpose or whatever, to accept the planet offering.

Saw ep5.

Are people going crazy about the ep? I hope people are taking it well. Whoa. And the ending. Whoooa.

I did dislike both evening events. The indoors one was a disaster and the outdoors one was contrived.

I really should like Sam but she's not grabbing me like Tendi, Rutherford and T'Lyn have yet. Maybe later on.

Jayle bait.

I wonder how watchers who aren't familiar with the backstory are absorbing the ep. They can't relate?

I read about this episode while I was at work today and watched it in the evening. I thought I would like it better. I do hope Illa will continue.

Continue to love the show.

It's just fun. And it's making great use of being Star Trek/

-ZacWilliam, in all the right ways for Star Trek.

They definitely stamped their feet down on the Doctor not being able to properly grieve even after 900 years. I wonder what they are planning there.

I saw an article that said since Avery Brooks has stopped acting, they found a line from an audio book he had done and got his permission to use it in the episode. That makes me kind of feel bleh. The line works ok. And I by no means believe an actor who played a beloved character should be a slave to it for the rest of their lives. But did they try asking if he would just record a line of dialog at his home and send it in?

I wasn't sure what it was supposed to be anyway. Did Sisko speak to her/us? Or is it just a thematic voiceover to make us squee?

It was neat to see Jake and to build up on Anslem. My wife and one of my friends are working their way through DS9 with me right now and it is killing me that I can't talk about this without hinting at spoilers.

I liked it for what it was. It was nice to see Jake again, and yeah, I hope Isla sticks around. I also loved learning more about Sam and seeing parts of San Fran that are not the Academy. Also, Jay-Den was wearing a skirt, which was as cool as it was unremarked-upon.

Didn't like how it seemingly invalidated Avery Brooks' insistence and turned Sisko into yet another absent black father (though another viewer noted that Kasidy and her child weren't even listed on the Sisko family tree, so at least there's a possibility she "disappeared" somewhere so she and Ben could raise their child in secret).

Jake is pretty insistent he believes Sisko WAS there.

I was recently reminded that the local MeTV's cartoon fork picked up the OG Animated Series. I've seen few episodes by now, and it's charmingly weird in its own 70s animation way. On the one hand, the limitations of 30 minute episodes to cram Trek stories into and the janky slash very-budget-conscious animation do take a toll. So, so much stock footage; only having to animate half the frame because the other half is an unreasonable closeup of someone's face; the Hanna-Barbara slide...

On the other, this was the only new Star Trek on TV between TOS and TMP, which given the context of time is pretty significant. And having the actual actors voice their animated characters wasn't exactly common at the time either (props to Nichols and Doohan for basically voicing 90% of the non-main characters too).

And on Arex's third hand, the animated format let them play with a lot of stuff that wouldn't have been possible in live action, whether for practical or 'merely' budgetary concerns. We get weirder aliens like Triaxaians, Caitians/Kzinti, all the gribblies that would have had to been stiff rubber suits or puppets in live action. Ships that could move in more than straight lines. Other ship designs, and weird ones like the Kzinti or Kulkulcan's that would have been crazy as models.

It's weird, it's charming, I know it absolutely has some trashfire-tier episodes amid the good ones...so, basially proper Star Trek anyway. :)
