Huh. I think my mind was subconsciously making the line rhyme with "tonight" because of the previous lyric.

Some really good answers from several past ranger actors:

Was just thinking earlier, if we ever got a new Red Dragon Thunderzord again, especially a higher-end one?

It would be really nice if its staff could break apart into more pieces and store in the underside of the torso in dragon mode.

Shinichiro Shirakura, a senior executive director and head producer of character business at Toei, explained why the Super Sentai franchise is ending its television run after 50 years in a interview with the Asahi Shimbun paper on Sunday. He also emphasized that he thinks the franchise (which spawned the Power Rangers franchise overseas) will return, but he thinks a decade-long hiatus would be good for the franchise.

The second "black ship" was the huge American comic hero wave. Shirakura noted that Marvel's Avengers has been particularly popular in Japan. He also said Marvel presents the characters from Captain America to Iron Man from different works in one unified package. By contrast, Super Sentai thus far would largely reset the story every year (aside from limited spinoff projects and crossover films), which impeded character development. (Not incidentally, Marvel famously collaborated with Toei on three early Super Sentai series.)
The ironic thing is Shirakura is known for being a bitter opponent of connecting Kamen Rider shows, which was where he made his name. He was famously hired because he hated the Kamen Rider Black sequel show Black RX. And as producer on the second Heisei Rider show Kamen Rider Agito, he basically squelched the idea of the show being a direct sequel to the first one Kamen Rider Kuuga. And he's thought to be the one that tried to kill any attempts to connect the latter Kamen Rider shows with overarching villains and storylines that other creators had developed.

So, what, he prefers SpongeBob-style storytelling, then, where every story is standalone and episodic with little-to-no continuity whatsoever?

Well...maybe more like Shonen Jump. A crossover between manga series can happen every once in a while. Like the One Piece x Dragon Ball Z x Toriko crossover. But, each individual story should be able to stand on it's own. Instead of relying on past stories or stories from other creators.

Personally, I kind of agree with the sentiment, if that was what he was going for. And it's not like we never got crossovers, ever. They just kept it to the annual movies. And stuff like Foundation X. It was a system that worked...until it didn't, I guess.

The "continuity-heavy" system has it's positives, but it also has it's drawbacks, too. As we're starting to see with the MCU and Star Wars, nowadays. Continuity going on for years is great for world-building and creating complex characters. But, there does come a point where it starts to get dragged down by it's own weight. People miss one entry in the franchise, and then think they can't just jump back in with the next one until they catch up. And then they procrastinate catching up, causing them to fall further behind. And soon, they give up trying to catch up at all because there's just too much "homework" for them to dig through. Or new fans just find the sheer volume of everything available in the franchise to be intimidating.

By keeping each season more self-contained, you limit that kind of problem. Anyone can catch up just by starting with that year's first episode. But, it does mean rebuilding everything from the ground up every time. And covering a lot of the same ground over and over again. A lot of the same tropes get used, which you can skip if you have pre-established characters. With a season-by-season model, it can feel a lot more formulaic, for good or for ill.

There are pluses and minuses to both systems. But, I liked how Sentai and Rider were handling things. It just stopped working out for Sentai. Which is a shame, because we were actually in the middle of a renaissance for the show, with every entry in the last 6 years being pretty universally praised by the fans for being new and different. It just didn't translate into toy sales, I guess. There was even talk of a multi-year plan that we'll probably never see pay off, now. It's a shame.

In a way it almost sounds like they want what Power Rangers tried to do. Since almost every series was set in the same world, and even if there was no direct connection between series they could still reference what came before, and it could be easy to drop in a previous character or characters without needing a lot of fanfare or reason, especially once they stopped destroying powers and such.

I just want to point out that the "Every sentai is it's own universe!" actually did have NEGATIVE effects on Power Rangers because of Sentai Snobs like Tzachor who demanded that each series follow the "SENTAI ROUTE!" and every season should be it's OWN... So he threw a fit and removed minor lines from things like Lightspeed rescue getting their zord tech from salvage from earlier rangers.

Heh, a lot of good that did since the team up with Lost Galaxy still firmly planted Lightspeed Rescue in the same universe as everything else from before.

And, well, having their zord tech being made entirely from scratch made Miss Fairweather all the more impressive as a tech genius.

I really hope Tzachor is having a mental meltdown over the fact PR may be continuing while Sentai is currently dead considering all the harm he did to PR.

On a different note, ConnerTheWaffle has reached the Neo-Saban Era with his retrospective for Samurai and Super Samurai.

Unlike his previous videos, he actually skips the Halloween and Christmas episodes this time around (since he felt he has nothing to say about them) and even skips Clash of the Red Rangers because he has "a LOT to say about" it and has decided to give it its own separate video to be released later on.

In comics news, it seems like Power Rangers Prime will end with issue 16 in April. Kind of a shame, but I'm not overly surprised since it never seemed to get as much love as the MMPR stuff.

But, we are getting...something after that. Boom announced a Power Rangers book for Free Comic Book Day (or rather "Comics Giveaway Day", it's a whole name rights licensing issue. It's still the first Saturday in May, May 2.).

No idea what it is exactly. It's probably new stuff, because I feel like they would have said if it was just a reprint. Could be a rebranding for Power Rangers Prime or it could be a Mighty Morphin reboot/continuation or it could be something else entirely. Hard to say.

I shouldn't have had to turn to the third party scene to get a full set of Quasar Sabres for the Galaxy Rangers, but here we are...
