Dang. I'm going to have to buy this Ultra Magnus now. I always liked how that inner robot looks. It looks somehow generic and heroic at the same time.
On the rare occasion that we get the inner robot Magnus anymore, I don't like the green highlights they tend to have. I don't know where the green came from and for me it doesn't work. But Universe Magnus is beautiful.
The original Ultra Magnus had that light blue that was midway between royal and sky blue that was common on a lot of 80s toys. And they used that colour as a highlight colour on G1 Magnus' inner robot. It was his faceplate colour, his headcrest colour, and the main colour on his sticker detailing.
My original thought was that Magnus' colours just shifted and that this lighter blue just became teal. Either because someone based something off of a yellowed older toy or just faulty memory... but that doesn't seem to be the case.
The story of teal on Ultra Magnus begins in 2005 with the repaint of the MP-01 Optimus figure...
This seems to be the first case of Magnus' inner robot design using teal/green. Strangely the comic panel that inspired that redeco gave him yellow hip detailing, like Optimus.
This teal addition isn't based on anything. It's not on the original toy, and it's not a case of Takara making a mistake regarding the original blue. The original light blue is clearly used on the MP's faceplate. The teal is just something they added due to artistic liberty.
The teal didn't take immediately though. The Laser Magnus redeco of Takara's Laser Prime reissue, which was at least partially based on his G1 inner robot, used both the original light blue and a deeper royal blue. Classics Magnus and both Titanium Magnuses (Magni?) used the lighter blue, as did the TT United repaint of Classics.
Strangely the next appearance of teal was from FunPub's Subscription Service.
Ultra Mammoth. They made the mammoth light blue but I swear it's got a greener tint to it compared to the classic Magnus light blue.
The next time Magnus' inner robot got referenced was Siege. In that toyline Magnus' armour was a deeper royal blue compared to the light blue of the G1 toy, and it seems like the designers decided to lean into the teal for the inner robot. Now it's not just the MP's teal hip detailing. That detailing as well as the faceplate are now teal.
It seems that by abandoning the light blue for Magnus' super mode they decided to go teal on the inner robot's detailing to give it more of its own identity.
Or they could have just been referencing the MP-01 repaint from 2005, which pulled teal out of nowhere.
Strangely this didn't even stick... Kingdom Ultra Magnus, which retooled the Siege version into an Earth mode design, kept the darker blue for the super robot but went back to the classic lighter blue on the inner robot.
I don't know if this was someone realizing the teal had no basis in G1, or if it was just meant to help distinguish the Kingdom version from the Siege version. Still, it's most recent time we've gotten a mainline toy referencing the Magnus inner robot and it did go with the right colours over the incorrect teal.
There's some non-transforming elements too, though. The MP-01 repaint that introduced the teal in 2005 was the basis for the 2007 Magnus repaint of Optimus' Revotech figure, and that used teal for the hip detailing.
This seemed to inspire this 2013 Loyal Subjects vinyl figure that leans hard into the teal.
This brings to the RED Ultra Magnus figure which kept the teal for the waist detailing.
The strange thing here is that this came out in 2021, the same year as Kingdom Magnus. And that removed the teal from the design.
Despite Kingdom Magnus being the most recent Magnus inner robot mainline figure, it's not the most recent time it's been referenced. And despite it removing the teal... it looks like the teal is here to stay.
2023's Threezero non-transforming Ultra Magnus action figure is based on his inner robot design and uses teal for most of his robot detailing. Like Revoltech and RED though, they kept the tradirional light blue for the faceplate.
2024 brought us Blokees Ultra Magnus based off of his inner robot design, using the teal for all of the detailing, even the faceplate.
It's strange. The last time we got Magnus' inner robot as a mainline figure it used the correct lighter blue detailing rather than the teal/green... but the non-transforming stuff based off of that design since has used the teal.
It makes it hard to gauge what HasTak's official stance is regarding Magnus' inner robot colours. Could be there are two acceptable options- teal or light blue- and they just use them whenever they want with no real rhyme or reason.
Still, the last couple of official products based off of the deign use teal, even if they're non-transforming side projects, so I'd guess that's the status quo going forward.
Again, this is very odd. I'd assumed time and faulty memory just judged Ultra Magnus' light blue highlights to teal, but no. The teal just appeared alongside the light blue on the MP-01 repaint out of nowhere... and it's just stuck.
