This was in a cranny of my desk and thought I'd share.

I was (and still am) one of the few who didn't loose their jive over Reveal The Shield Jazz, but I made sure to obtain a second one when (then) ReproLabels made a G2 conversion set (before the Generations multipack) years ago.

Then when Studio Series '86 Jazz came out I made sure to acquire two: one for stock and the other in anticipation for a G2 set for the mold, something that actually will justify their practice of excessively superfluous sticker sets.

Then they released THEIR set. The spare I bought got binned for toys for tots.

It's a great one. It's still the Jazz that I use, even though he's slightly too big for the modern scale.

What was wrong with it?

Didn't get it, only peripherally being into the G2 Jazz deco myself (and really at today's prices that was a comfortable nope), but it seemed underwhelming.

To me the main thing is it ended up looking very similar to the G1 Jazz at a glance. Instead of going the "white sticker over existing blue stripe" route their RTS and even POTP sets took, they just played along with the stripe, replacing the blue-red-blue racing stripe with a black-based "equalizer bars" stripe. Doesn't help that the eighth notes tend to be oddly compact (and the one on the hood is mostly on the stripe). The eighth notes on the doors also seem backwards compared to the original G2 (the right-hand door should have the tail closer to the rear of the car). Finally, the stripes on the rear fenders are just plain blue stripes instead of having the pinstriping and lettering of the original. (The metallic blue is also just generally dark for a G2 Jazz, whose blue is very much a sky blue.)

I would love a remake of this design but without all the stuff hanging off the arms
It's a great design. It's just that it needed one or two more passes to work out all of the issues.

It's why I'd love to see it get a modern CHUG remake. The concept and general design are really solid. Having another pass with modern engineering would really let it live up to its potential.

That would pretty much turn him into a genetic looking Soundwave, almost, as from a general look, he would be much like Siege Soundwave only with a bigger back pack as the stuff hanging off his arms are the front and top of his vehicle mode, the only changes I would make are:
1. Ankle tilts
2. Rails for his barrels weapons/partner to slide in and out on
3. Wrist movement

I would keep it simple and not over think the desgin like they did with 86 Astrotrain, stay faithful to the original desgin and just update the basics for the most part, my only real compaint about the original is the barrels and how its a pain getting them to clip into place, otherwise, he is good for his time and really stands out from the other Soundwaves as he was the first one since G1 to appear in a animated show and look pretty cool to boot, sure he never did a lot in the show but he was certainly a intersting look for Soundwave, while Animated went a bit weirder with a Van and having Laserbeak as a gutar, then Prime went back to miltray desgin but instead of a Stealth Fighter, he became a Spy drone

unluckiness

Somehow still sane

I'm not 100% sure, but I suspect that the gold face, different shoulder gun, different chest window, skinny and pointy legs, the color purple and maybe, just maybe, the gigantic wings might keep it from looking like Siege Soundwave.
