Iran. Nuff said.

We're certainly all better off than if he were actually committed to it. Which, in turn, would be a better scenario than if he were committed and had a clue what he was doing. It's the same reason nobody has ever treated North Korea as a serious threat.

I'm, frankly, at the point I wish the media would STOP reporting every single time Trump would post about an "impending agreement". He's been talking about this "war, but not a war" being close to ending SINCE IT BEGAN. Unless something is in legal writing, it's all noise to jack with the stock market (which is probably the point, TBH)

wonko the sane?

You may test that assumption at your convinience.

There's nothing in writing because iran refused to negotiate until trump sent ACTUAL negotiators (not kushner and jagoff.) and started releasing frozen iranian funds. Trump can't commit to a large scale war, and his mental illness won't let him admit mistake and actually withdraw troops.

Until he actually has to pay them, in which case he'll start bombing again.

But this is also how wars have traditionally worked: the loser pays for them.

This is all assuming that anything Vance says can be believed. What incentive does he have to be any more truthful about this than his führer?

Vance only knows what Trump tells him and only says what Trump tells him to say. And since we all know we can't trust Trump......

The fact that he opened his mouth at all is indicative of how desperate they are to spread this one through any channel available. Dude might as well be hiding in Cheney's undisclosed location for as little as we've seen or heard from him this entire adminstration.

Oh hug. He gave them everything and his daughter, didn't he?
Not far off. From what I've read, while Iran is supposed to be agreeing to keeping the Straight of Hormuz open and a stop of military actions...in exchange they get some $25 BILLION in unfrozen assets (depending on nuclear agreement), PLUS another $300 BILLION in a reconstruction fund, lifting of the Naval blockade, restrictions on Israel's military actions, and another 60 days to work out a nuclear non-proliferation agreement. An agreement (like many Trump said were "bad deals" under Obama) will probably look pretty damn similar to what Obama managed to get done WITHOUT giving Iran hundreds of billions, an elevated political position in the region, all while the US undermines its international standing.

"The Great Deal Maker", indeed!

I've had pro-war cheerleaders elsewhere tell me that this was all done to liberate the Iranian people from the tyranny of the current regime. And that I'm a monster for not thinking that collapsing the global economy is worth making that happen.

So are we any closer to the Iranian people thanking us for their freedom?

On one hand, if he really does pull out, he'll still be able to brag that his pointless war lasted less than a tenth as long as Bush's. On the other hand, history will probably say that they were on the verse of a revolution that would successfully overthrow the regime and bring lasting peace until we came along and cocked it up.

Quick reminder: JCPOA was not a legally-binding treaty that passed the Senate, it was a personal handshake between Barack Obama and Iran, and all the 2016 Republicans campaigned on reversing it, with Trump just being the one who got in and did it. This new.... whatever-it-is.... is the same, and if somehow it is even remotely still in force by 2029, any President other than JD Vance will end it immediately.

Because they also want to get credit for dissolving it and replacing it with the exact same agreement but with their name on it?

Had this one survived (it didn't. Israel has already attacked lebanon again, which is a red line.) it would have been notably worse than the JCPOA, because it gives a hell of a lot more to iran than they had. Like controlling the straight.

They don't need a nuke, they have their hands around the energy jugular of the world.

Speaking of that jugular - one year later, I can admit I was wrong on this one.

I truly was sure that since the Iranian standard military is so weak, and the rest of the world so dependent on oil, obviously "the spice must flow" and every world power would team up and BTFO of them. Trump is so bad at the job, he couldn't even get the world's rich asshole oligarchs and military-industrial complex to protect their own revenue streams. Any previous president would have been able to do it.
