Iran's economy in freefall. They've got some of the biggest oil and gas reserves in the world, but they're freezing this winter because the regime spent all their infrastructure money on Hezbollah.

So it appears sanctions are doing what they're supposed to. Wonder how much longer the people are going tolerate this before deciding nukes aren't worth freezing to death in their own homes.

Well, it's the middle east, so "freezing" is a bit hyperbolic... I think? Or are they going through the same freak weather patterns as Texas?

It's all relative. Ask some of our Floridian posters how they feel about mid-50s (F) weather that wouldn't even make us northerners pull out more than maybe a light jacket.

Mid-50s weather causes more panic down here than a Category 3.

Trump has moved at least six B-2 stealth bombers to Diego Garcia, from which they could bomb Iran without needing to overfly any other country.

There are typically Trumpy unconfirmed / contradictory claims of a major meeting with the Iranian regime in Oman this Saturday. It is a direct meeting between America and Iran, though maybe it's indirect through intermediaries, and it is meant to negotiate a new nuclear deal, unless it isn't and is just stage-setting.

Oh right. Remember when he almost started World War III and then COVID happened and derailed everybody's plans? Those plans are now back on.

Summary: Israel really wanted to strike Iran now, when it is at its weakest point in decades. Trump vetoed that and insisted on negotiating a "new nuclear deal" instead, with the plausible threat of a joint strike if talks fail. Any deal would need a global enforcement structure run by multiple countries that could not possibly trust Trump and certainly shouldn't trust Iran either.

wonko the sane?

You may test that assumption at your convinience.

So if I understand you correctly: a joint strike with many extra steps.

So far it does not appear that Iran is prepared to respond to this in any meaningful way. They may have nothing left in the tank.

"At least several months ago, Israel’s top spy agency, the Mossad, began to smuggle missiles into Iran and secretly installed swarms of explosive drones deep inside the country, laying the groundwork for a devastating Israeli surprise attack on Friday morning. As Israel launched its air attack, the Mossad activated its planted drones, which struck missile launchers at a base near Tehran, a senior Israeli official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence operations."
Other things from that live updates page:
Israel’s attacks on Iran early Friday dealt a severe blow to Tehran’s military leadership, killing three senior commanders including the army’s chief of staff and the head of the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or IRGC.
Maj. Gen. Mohammad Bagheri, the army chief of staff and a veteran of the IRGC, reported directly to the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran said Friday that the Israeli attacks damaged the Natanz nuclear facility in the center of the country.
In a statement shared by Iranian media, the organization said it was assessing the extent of the damage but added that there have been no reports of casualties or radioactive or chemical contamination at the site.
Israel’s air force “continues to strike in Iran,” Israeli military spokesperson Effie Defrin said in a statement. Defrin said “most” of the drones launched by Iran were intercepted. He also said Israeli attacks have “significantly damaged” Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility. “We have objectives for the war, and we will continue to act toward those objectives until they are achieved,” Defrin said, adding: “We are preparing for a prolonged operation.”
Iran considers Israel’s attacks to be a “declaration of war,” Iranian Foreign Minster Abbas Araghchi said in a letter addressed to the United Nations and shared on his Telegram channel.
Araghchi described the attacks as “a gross violation of Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity” and called for an emergency session of the U.N. Security Council.
