Remember when we argued over the Robots in Disguise brand being used in a toyline years after the main RID line ended? :)
I remember when Classics came out, and this one Australian guy on TFormers was livid about the name because he insisted only the early 90s gold box line could be called "Classics."

He later got insistent that the 2006 line was "Robots in Disguise '06" and not Classics, because the packaging had the "Robots in Disguise" tagline.

"Fetch" never happened for him, I'm afraid.

LordGigaIce, that's basically what I said, I thought? Except for the bit about the retailers; I think my idea there was I remember it being done similarly to how Phazer mentioned, but have no way of knowing how close to that or far from that it is now. I think all we're left to quibble over is whether to call Generations an umbrella or line and Studio Series/AOTP lines or sublines.

To be honest, I spent a silly amount of time trying to find WHERE it said "Generations" on the packaging, thinking it was text or something near the line logo somewhere. And when I finally saw it was the Autobot logo with "Generations" under it -- and my eye had been glossing over it, because it's really not that different from the Hasbro or Takara logos, or the "authentic Transformers product" notation, the current "# steps" graphics, and so on. Reduced to that kind of indicator/notation -- and not appearing with the line logo -- I think it's fair to think of it more as a category of toy rather than a line itself.

This is consistent with how they don't typically refer to these or necessarily promote these AS Generations alone (typically paired with one of the actual line names) and we typically only see it in that little logo and in internal documents like solicitations and computer listings.

But again, that probably just comes back to splitting semantic hairs, so I'll just shrug 😅

I remember some people not wanting to call it "Classics" because the name was just in listings and nowhere on the packaging.

I also remember at least one person suggesting people call PRID (the white-card Prime line subtitled RID) RID2.

I also remember a lot of uncertainty about whether to count the Armada-era Dinobots as their own line since it had its own logo (in Armada style but not mentioning Armada), and the Armada-era RID2001-logo toys (are they RID? The boxes SAY RID.)

Basically if a line uses RID there'll be some kerfuffle or other.

The toy industry has changed so much in the last twenty years, who even knows what a "line" even entails?

"Which line" matters to us - to a degree - but for people outside the fandom - when I put something on a wish list so that my wife knows I won't buy it for myself between now and the next Christmas/Birthday/other holidays that I cross my fingers and hope for new toys, I link to the the specific item at Amazon and paste in a picture of the box.

Yeah, I do basically the same thing. When there are TFs I am hunting, and my wife is shopping somewhere I'm not going to be for a while, I'll screenshot pics of the boxes and send them to her. Best way to get the right ones. Unfortunately, thrift stores and garage sales are a different matter...

Meanwhile, I'm over here with my fully functional Takara Metals Megatron (the version not afflicted with GPS so that's a non-issue in my case) knowing this new figure will have a lot to live up to in regards to measuring up to the original mold.

He’ll be slightly bigger, more articulated, and more “show nods” that the toy can’t replicate. Dare I hope for finger blasters?

Hopefully his tail weapon can actually be held without flopping around. That, aside from fragility, was always my biggest problem with the original.

Also, hopefully they get around to Rampage and Depth Charge soon.
