A small thoughts thread: what are you playing and how is it going?

I bought a PS5 a few months ago, so I've been spending a lot of my free time there. Played Baldur's Gate III for my first game on it. Finished my first playthrough of it about a week ago. Still playing around with the different endings I can get starting from the point of no return and trying to decide what character I'd like to play next, but might take some time away from it first.

Meanwhile, watched most of my wife's playthrough of Dispatch. I say most because she decided to pull an all-nighter when I had to get up for work the next morning, so I didn't get to see the last chapter. I'll probably give it a try myself at some point.

Just started Alan Wake the other day. I think I'm about half way through the main game. Could have played it on PS4 previously, but loaded it onto the PS5 along with the second game. Thinking I might go for Control and AW2 once I finish it up.

I have to say, I'm starting to hold a major grudge against BG3. I've always preferred inverted controls for the camera. It just feels more natural to me to tilt the stick where I want to move the camera, rather than where to tilt the view while in third person. But BG3, big as it is, somehow doesn't include an option to invert the controls. And after a few hundred hours of dealing with backwards camera controls, I actually struggled for a bit when I started Alan Wake. I got over it after a little while. But then I got to control a car for the first time. It turns out that the option to change the camera controls just doesn't apply in vehicle mode!

I could probably deal with just having the controls be wrong for the sporadic vehicle sections, but after having been forced to get used to non-inverted controls, I'm feeling like I don't have a natural default anymore. I'm struggling each time it switches.

Combine all the above with a few similar issues I've run into in the past, plus my daughter's preference to use non-inverted, and it's feeling like being able to keep my preference is a losing battle. I'm disgusted to say I might just have to permanently switch to non-inverted controls. 😮‍💨

On It Takes Two, the Cutie the Elephant murder scene could have been much worse, in my head. If they played some evil music, it would have been horrible, yow.

On Silksong, I was livestreaming and a guy said I could do the 'Garama' by pressing R stick. The game did not tell me I could do that! Where was the tutorial moment for it? What does it even do?!?! It's suppose to draw enemies towards you?

I've beaten the Sister Splinter enemy so far, with help from the chat.

I think the Cutie scene was perfect. TMM and I laughed our heads off, we couldn't believe they did that. Horrible, but funny. There's also a little homage to Cutie in Split Fiction.

I'm still enjoying the hex out of Silksong but I hate the drab Greymoor and their stupid flying enemies flying all over, ugh. I only livestream with my friend once a week but I want to play MORE!

Also I did this 32sec clip, which I tried convincing my friend is funny but he doesn't know the bit. It's based on a trend but, y'know, I figure humor sometimes doesn't always have to follow and whatever (like the 6 7 thing). It makes me laugh when I watch it but, well, I made it so I'm biased, haha.

Is it funny? Or at least interesting?

I'm playing Silksong once a week and it's killing me! I wanna play moooooore! Haha

It's a little horrible cuz during the wait, I end up looking at some info and get spoiled a bit. I missed a whole fight and intro sequence from getting to Greymoor cuz I did the Flea collection and joining the caravan bypasses a bit.

I didn't meet... Garamond and Zaza? From when they're supposed to help me fight a Moorwing boss? I only saw Garamond afterwards, resting. Dang, didn't know you can miss some content.

Anyhow, halfway through 7th Guest Remake. Started playing Sinking City Remastered cuz friend got it for me. It's great but there's so many mechanics.

For two player games, started Ship of Fools (roguelite), Stardew Valley, some Wizard of Legend from last week.

Ship of Fools is fun and nice Amphibia looking art. Want to find all the characters to use. I think I like it better than Wizard of Legend. Stardew is... OK.

What thread could this go to? Going to a con and made a simple Hollow Knight ish mask. Hard to make curves so my mask looks sorta like the Pale King. Had a red cloak thingy made so I guess im sort of a random Hollow Nest or Silksong Pharloom bug person, haha

I just finished a run through of scrap mechanic, because a massive update is dropping next friday that pushes the game out of early access and launches 1.0.

Some youtubers I used to watch are doing new survival runs in the preview build: and god damn does the game look great.

Saw some Hollow Knight cosplay love at the con. Soooorta.

38711.jpg

There was a 3D printed helmet Hornet that made me self conscious of my own handmade mask...
38727.jpg

There was a Zote. A ZOTE!
38739.jpg

There's an actual Hollow Knight!

But no Ghost aka the Knight aka the player character in the game?

Oh well, haha.

There was THIS cosplay though. He looks like he has the Ghost's cloak AND his nail weapon but... what's the mask?
38731.jpg

Is he a crossover cosplay?

Holy cow, I must have missed some Silksong content again.

Going up the Blasted Steps is proooooobably the way to go to the Citadel, since the story was heading that way. But as I was at a bench near the top, I decided to check out Bilewater. Which led me to the Mist puzzle. Which led me to fighting the Phantom.

Then, all of a sudden, I'm in the Citadel?!?! I got an Act 2 cutscene and met Lace again. The Mist was a back entrance?

I fear that I missed something like not fighting a boss to get to Greymoor cuz the fleas quest got me in, ugh

So I am back on scrap mechanic. I do love me a build 'em game, and this one is both simple and complex. Combined with the cartoony graphics, it's a fun romp.

They also just updated the game... after six years of promising. And, not gonna lie, it was time well spent. Everything got a once over. graphics, sound, mechanics, enemy AI, weapons, EVERYTHING.

One of the core mechanics is farming, and defending the farm from farm bot raids. The normal method is to built a strong wall and attach a crusher to it. A plate of metal on pistons working on a button. 10 seconds of work, raid done. Me? I like spinning things. I set up metal bars on motors, and then set them to directionally spin away from my farm. Usually kills the bot when they interact when they try pass through the spinny bit to get to the wall. Sometimes though, I get to watch a hay bot get tossed into the next county. Full team rocket treatment, including the disappearing into the sky.

And god, it just make me smile...

And an update: Yesterday I spent my time building out a nice base away from the mechanics garage. I built it on a curved road backed by a small lake. I had access to water, I had minimized my defensive foot print, I had all my infrastructure moved over. I built a massive new farm with automatic watering. I lived THERE now. Sure, I need to hide when the seekerbot comes 'round, but it's hardly an issue.

I was in the process of upgrading the fence with a stronger material (cause there are now red explosive totebot enemies... oy.) and apparently pulled up the ONE BLOCK holding my entire base; building, defenses and automatic watering all... and watching it slowly lever backwards into the lake.

Took me an hour to fix. Didn't even realize it took an hour, was having fun the whole time. I'm mostly done upgrading my fence too. Half tempted to trigger a new raid just to see how it survives.

Played Silksong again and haven't gotten to the entrance yet (where I know there's a boss) because the Citadel is HUGE! I've found two of the three new areas with the melodies but i'm realizing that Act 2 Citadel is practically the same size as Act 1 outdoor areas!

The Citadel has its own fast travels system! Not as cute as the Bell Beast but it just means that there's a ton to explore, geez, haha

Also I finished 7th Guest puzzle, whew.

Omgaramond, I'm having trouble with bosses! Well, a bunch. But I did beat Moorwing. I didn't realize he still spawns in Act 2.

Still, I have Beastfly unbeaten. Then tried to do the Broodwing side quest (lost 400 beads), tried to beat the Last Judge. And met Trobbio.

That's four bosses I can't beat! Ugh!

I replayed War for Cybertron a couple weeks ago. Then I finally got around to Fall of Cybertron. Just finished the main campaign the other day. Still going through to pick up the audio logs and blueprints I missed and upgrade all my weapons. Haven't decided if I'm going to play through on hard or not. There doesn't seem to be anything to gain from it other than a trophy, and it's not possible to get a platinum now with the multiplayer servers down, so I might just skip it. I was generally familiar with the game's story ahead of time, but I was surprised at how it just kinda stops without any real ending, and the final battle having absolutely no consequences was disappointing. Other than that, they both were still fun to play through. Guess I'll see just how bad Rise of the Dark Spark is next.

Aside from that, my big current project is trying to resurrect my SNES. I finally got it out of the storage crate it lived in for a few years while we recovered from a basement flood. Hooked it up and turned it on, and got nothing but a black screen. I'm in the process of refurbishing what I can, but I'm worried one of the main chips might be dead. Mine is the original launch model, and I've learned that model is particularly susceptible to such failures. It's my favorite console, so I'm really hoping I can bring it back to life.

Don't play it on hard. It's insane how fast you run out of ammo on hard mode and you do that constantly.

Its not as bad as you think. It has a lot of WFC/FOC assets in it, which greatly improve the game over the other Bayverse games.

I am sorry to hear that. Have you tried replacing the capacitors? They sell a kit on ebay for about $10 with a voltage regulator. That might help out and would be worth a try. You might need a special screwdriver bit to open up the SNES though.

The better bet than eBay is Console5, a site that specializes in such kits and parts. The fact that it's a local Michigan company is a nice bonus! I've replaced all the electrolytic capacitors on the main board as of last night. Still need to clean off the flux and check my work before I test it. Have a replacement regulator, but I won't install that until after I verify the caps since I need to cover them with the heatsink to position it accurately. Also thoroughly cleaned all the connectors (didn't seem to need it, but best to be thorough) and replaced the fuse (which was fine, until I slipped while checking the regulator and blew it). And have a new power supply to try in case that's the issue.

If it still won't boot after all that, I can only assume either one of the main chips is shot or the sound module has an issue. I really don't know of any way of diagnosing those unless I can at least get a flash cart to boot so I can use the burn-in cartridge ROM. Supposedly those can still work even if the CPU is shot, so the fact that I couldn't get that to boot either at least has me hopeful it could be something less catastrophic.
