A Long Time Ago In a Galaxy Far, Far Away.... - Star Wars General Discussion

Saw Mandalorian yesterday. While it was an ok random Mando adventure, it was not worthy a trip to theater. There were quite a few moments, when I wanted to fast forward a scene, because it was dragging so much. Sigourney Weaver sleepwalks through her role, never once changing her monotone delivery. The action was nice, especially opening assault on the Imperial remnants. Also Shakari theme is fantastic:

All in all, to paraphrase a meme, "this whole movie could have been a Disney+ mini series!!". It was a bad idea to put it in theater, just like it was a bad idea to do it with Clone Wars in 2008. Funny, that both time Filloni is involved. As for why this movie is not breaking the box office, I think this might be the reason:

That for someone who's not a fan of this particular corner of Star Wars lore, it's just a bunch of random stuff happening on screen. At the same time, my theater was about 80% full, so what do I know.

A friend got tickets Friday for my birthday, and had a lady not shown up right before the start it would have been a private showing, no one else was in the theater at all. Very weird. That has happened to me once before, back in the 80's as a kid, with Harry and the Hendersons. I actually liked it, but had the weird epiphany that you can buy a plastic Mandalorian helmet, and a nerf gun. So for eye safety, one bit of merchandising defends against the other.

I did feel sorry for Grogu, he's short which probably made climbing out of the plot holes rather difficult, but I did like the movie!

I enjoyed it very much. But it's also hard to justify repeat viewing given how MUCH of this I can watch at home. Which might be why the box office dropped like a rock.

Saw the Mandalorian and Grogu this past weekend. Possibly the first movie I've bothered to go to a theater for in five years.

I liked it. Would I *rather* it had been a series? Probably. But that wasn't what they gave us.

My only fear is that it could be the last time we see these characters. I want more.

I finished Season 1 of Resistance just now.

My Thoughts:

The show gets better in the second half. Starting around episode 10 Kaz starts being competent enough, enough of the time, that he becomes a more viable protagonist. By the final 5 or so he's actually cool and kicks some butt. And Tam backs off being angry and suspicious quite so often. She never gets much of anything else to do (she gets a back story but it's brief and barely touched on) but at least her one note nature isn't on display quite so strongly.

The first Order plot really kicking in during the back half really helps too, as it gives Kaz and Co something meaningful to do and it escalates dramatically from vague threat to fascist occupation.

Sadly this also gives Tam her only character development as she goes from being the one who is angry at and suspicious of Kaz to being the one who is a First Order sympathizer who's family enjoyed working for the Empire and appreciates giving up freedom for order and "safety" and eventually joins the FO side at season end. Kaz is a good kid for being so concerned for her because she's really given him no reason to feel like she's his friend and been very clear about choosing the First Order of her own free will. Torra stepping in as the Lady third of the main trio in the final episodes is really a huge improvement.

Everyone other than her, including the pirates, coming together and escaping the FO for an unknown destination was a suitably climactic and exciting place to end the season. (Also since I havnt mentioned it, any episode where Poe shows up tended to kick things up a notch.)

It's a shame this show stumbles out of the gate so badly. I'm not surprised it isn't hugely popular when it takes a half a season to get decent.

I've seen none of Season 2, and I don't think I even heard any talk about what happens so I'm interested to see what's up next.

-ZacWilliam, I did the math, between the 2 Seasons Reaistance is roughly 16.5 hours of story and the films are only around 7 hours so this show really is the vast bulk of the Sequel era. Strange to think about that.

Full trailer. I see spaceships, laser guns, aliens, droids, laser swords and even a little bit of a throwback to the Itano Circus. Looks like a Star Wars anime to me!

Still dig the narrative element of the lightsaber reflecting the user, rather than a simple color, being put more to the forefront here. Series premieres August 5th
