Comixology posted a small Twitter thread about the changes today. It was sort of a grudging acknowledgement there are issues, but without any meaningful promises of improvement or genuine apology.

Correct. It used to be a Comixology specific system, as of the new app it's the standard Kindle DRM used for all Kindle ebooks.
