He kinda loves the danger though. Despite his lazy and dirt-phobic moments he does want to be the hero that he is in his dreams. He just sometimes remembers that his real abilities are limited, and then he doesn't know what to do.
Mey Hem's setting makes it easy for him to stay in his hero mindset.

If I had to pick only one I'd go with Machine Wars because I gotta be me. But this really seems like a 'collect them all' situation. There is no wrong choice here.
Neither approach feels inherently wrong. Sonic is admittedly really weird. A slow rollout worked Well. You could argue that Mario's world is also weird but if you don't get too much into game mechanics (powerups and such) the setting doesn't take that much explanation. Diving right in might be fine.
