Heh, Galoob not having creative input from Hasbro proper on those figures is a strong factor for why so many of those figures turned out the way they did.

Back when Hasbro had little reverence for the past, always looking forward and never looking back. Back when Soundwave was forbidden to ever become a cassette player or even a non-vehicular object ever again (Takara's MP3 player Soundwave had no creative input from Hasbro).
