I'm not clear what a peaceful protest of the stabbing would be hoping to achieve. Literally no one in power wants there to be children getting stabbed.

OK, so if I understand what he's saying correctly, it wasn't that he is intending to set up a dictatorship and abolish elections, it's that he just wants to be elected this time so he can rig everything in his favour and then he doesn't care if anyone votes in the 2028 election because he won't...
I've just realised that the reason Vance doesn't wear an eyepatch like I was expecting is I was mistaking him for Dan Crenshaw.
But, I mean:
Dan Crenshaw does look like JD Vance with an eyepatch, so I feel like that was an honest mistake to make.

Personally, if I was running the Republican party, I would be very concerned that the party's choices have resulted in registered republicans taking up arms against their own candidate. That would make me a think a significant number of Republicans would not be happy voting for Trump.
