    Misc. European politics

I can’t think of a European country with ranked-ballot voting apart from Ireland (the Republic of). Most use proportional representation. France is a rare exception, using a British/American style “winner takes all” system, but different as they have two-round elections,

    Misc. European politics

The Socialist Party, the main non-conservative party in France until five years ago, is now so weakened that its remnants are siding with the far-left Rebellious France for the National Assembly elections. That’s yet another European centre-left party going from government to oblivion in a short...

Now the Tories are accusing Labour and the Libdems of having a pact to win power, which is literally what all post-2010 Tory governments have done.

The government is delaying the imposition of import checks on EU goods for another 18 months, because they must realise that doing all the required checks properly will cripple the economy.

When it works, it works surprisingly well. Given that we have no written constitution, and governments can do what they want without the House of Lords, at least when the Lords bother to do their job. (I still want to replace the House of Lords with an elected senate, and have a written...

Nobody has the intention to invade Ukraine

This is the makeup of the Russian parliament (State Duma). Dark blue is Putin’s party. Lighter blue is the overly fascist LDPR. Yellow is the fake “centre left” party which backs Putin’s policies and presidency. Red is the Communist party, which is ultranationalist and reactionary...

Nobody has the intention to invade Ukraine

Indeed. It’s just gaslighting by the Tories, BBC and rest of the UK media that Johnson is a Churchill figure who’s the sole reason why Putin hasn’t already conquered all of Ukraine.

Nobody has the intention to invade Ukraine

Last night on the TV news we had countless Tory MPs appear telling the public that “Boris” (he’s always referred to by first name only) can’t be forced to resign for breaking the law because he’s the main opposition to Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, unlike surrender monkeys France, Germany and the...

BBC and Channel 4 are both public. The difference is that the BBC is funded by the TV licence (and thus airs no advertising), and Channel 4 is funded by on-air advertising. ITV isn’t connected to Channel 4. If you want the history, basically… We had three TV channels until Channel 4 launched...

Oh, this was last week, but the government are going to privatise the public station Channel 4 and sell it to one of their big business media backers. It is/was the last broadcaster in the UK to do more than follow the Tory party / government’s official line on every topic.

It’s as least as bad as the States. And the government seem to be completely above the law, if the ongoing Partygate scandal has taught us anything. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Partygate
