    Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

jive, sorry to hear that. My gf and friends have had years of verbal jive in the workplace due to being from a certain EU countries. Nothing worse than those sort of ‘colleagues’ who drag nationalism into everything. Wish more people would understand that a person is not their government…

Nobody has the intention to invade Ukraine

The war could go on years, and most likely will. But it won’t be forever. Still, Ukraine would need at least a decade to join fully even if the war ended today, we’re all aware of that. It’s still an important sign of European solidarity, and a path for Ukraine to rebuild itself long term once...

Nobody has the intention to invade Ukraine

Ukraine’s officially in the queue for EU membership, along with Moldova and Georgia. (Obv. Ukraine won’t be joining while the current conflict’s ongoing.)

Who's trying to break the internet today?

The internet was best when it was mostly the domain of hobbyists and academics. Or really, when it was a balance of the amateurs and the nerds with the more business/corporate side – there was a nice sweet spot when the internet was “useful enough” (online retail existed, and you could get your...

UK politics thread – meet the new boss, same as the old boss

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-67612106 Key sentence: “The minimum income for family visas has also risen to £38,700.” Which is up from £18,600. So British people with foreign spouses are going to lose their spouses to deportation, even if they’ve resided here for years or decades. (And...

    Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

Edit: remove this bit as I was inaccurate on historical information. (FWIW, I don’t think a two-state solution would be a “magic bullet” which would lead to everlasting peace, but it’d be better than the horrifying situation in the Middle East we see before us now.)

Funnily enough, the current Swedish government is a Conservative/Liberal/Christian Democrat coalition –it’s one of those small breaks between the Labour Party being in power.

    Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

The “stop cheering on civilian deaths, you bloodthirsty Zios” act doesn’t work. Because no one here has cheered on civilian deaths. Ever taken into account some of us were appalled by Hamas’ 7 October massacre because we feared the further bloodshed it’d inevitably lead to?

UK politics thread – meet the new boss, same as the old boss

I mean, the UK could rejoin the Single Market relatively straightforwardly, and still realign with it very quickly, which would rescue the economy, but they won’t. Because Europe = Bad to both the left and the right.

No, they aren’t, particularly as like the Tories they refuse to enact any realignment with Europe (which would boost the economy overnight). It’s just going to be ongoing decline for the foreseeable.

Private spaceflight should be banned. It’s incredibly polluting, a waste of natural and economic resources, and gives the human race zero positive benefit – no human will ever set foot on Mars, let alone be able to ever live there. Space travel and colonisation is essentially impossible.

Javier Milei is now President of Argentina

Conservatives on both sides of the Atlantic are going to idolise this man and hold him up as role model as he trashes his country, as they used to with Pinochet.

I didn’t say all the far-left are a/s. However, antisemitism is unfortunately a deeply embedded trope on the far-left, particularly the Marxist far-left. It’s less based on notions of outright biological racism than far-right antisemitism, but just as deep in the conspiratorial, “cunning global...
