Originally Studio Series was solely for live action film stuff; then it expanded to include animated films. Then videogames and concept characters, and soon comics, but ultimately the idea is "Hey, here is a thing from a piece media that we're ostensibly trying to make look like it does in that piece of media."

Generations is just whatever the designers feel like. If they want to make it look like it's from the cartoon, they will. If they don't, they won't. If they want to make an original character, or a weird interpretation of an existing character, they will.

So, long story short, the difference is Devastator was in the '86 film and Superion wasn't.

I would add that the SS86 portion of Studio Series muddies the waters considerably through its inconsistency. It has a mix of toys designed to be the cartoon cels brought to life, toys designed to be cartoon-centric versions of typical Generations toys, retools of existing toys modified to be just a bit more like the cartoon, and existing Generations toys that were just deemed close enough to be Studio Series. It's had releases of characters in multiple molds (Starscream once his confirmed new version is available) and decos (Hot Rod, Kup). It nominally fits within a standardized robot scaling that was first established by Studio Series, but then redefines its scale midway through, but only for select releases. So you end up with things like Ultra Magnus being bigger than the Dinobots, or Shockwave looking tiny next to the other major Decepticons.

For me at least, it's just a very frustrating line.

So... not too dissimilar from what would crop up even with Toei, then. 😉

I knew SS86 was a ship without a rudder when we'd get designer commentary that was like "we fought for a pink Hot Rod like he was in the movie but they said no" and "lmao who would want YELLOW on the Dinobots" at the same time.

So I finally got Overcharge (at a discount!) and I never got Legacy Blitzwing and I gotta say-- I like this toy a lot. The transformations are good, the Hulk Hands are great... The tank cockpit is stoopid but it's accurate to Blitzwing on TV so it's ok.

also it lets you have a jet tank like some vertical 8-bit shoot-'em-up and I heartily endorse such things

I'm annoyed that that recolour was never released in Japan.

Overcharge is definitely on my "When I have money and can breathe again" list. I like that color scheme, and the design looks fine to me. Especially since someone came up with a fanmode that turns the jet mode's tank kibble into a flight stand. It's hilarious and awesome.

Not a fan of this mold, but I'm in for any of that era of eHobby stuff, so I skipped Blitzwing and was happy when this was announced. Prices were also not as volatile and ridiculous at the time (feels much further away). SS86 Blitzwing (or DCS Blitzwing, idk) is in that "if and when I have money for this sort of thing" spot instead. Currently still holding on to my LG Blitzwing, but that may change down the line (I did get that mostly for Big Fight).
