I don't remember if this was ever used as a cover, but if it wasn't, it should have been.

Longtime favorite of mine. And beats the pants off the new one.
That's a digital touchup of the Japanese movie poster art, which had more washed-out colors:

I'm sure they said the same about Vaudeville
I'm not saying they'll be around forever. But 10 years? Even if it got so bad that studios stopped releasing new movies to theaters, which I think is very unlikely in that time frame, you'd still have quite a few hanging around to show movies for special events.

This is the best one. I remember having a poster of the one LordGigaIce posted, with the big Decepticon behind Prime (this was in like the late 80s/early 90s, with the original logo rather than the RID2001-onwards one). Never associated it with the movie myself because there's absolutely nothing movie-focused about it -- and even wondered if it might be a bootleg because of the incongruous Decepticon logo. It might be a perfect MTMTE (the original 3-parter) or cartoon promo poster because it has the general main elements from there (the ships, the volcano, even Ravage escaping Hound) -- except, bizarrely, Megatron. To Starscream's delight. "Megatron has been omitted from this poster! I, Starscream, am the new leader!"

But this poster, wow. Hot Rod's torso parts seem to go in two slightly different directions, and I wish the background had the Quintesson ship instead of or in addition to the Lithone escape craft, but it really encapsulates the movie. Core cast is there, maybe with some noticeable gaps (maybe have Wreck-Gar and Junkions in the distance on the surface, and Galvatron and co in the distance in space) but it's less busy for it. Unicron is a looming threat in two ways, Hot Rod (maybe makes more sense than Rodimus, it's fine) and the Matrix are the focal point, and it's dark and atmospheric (a different version with the wild and saturated 80s color palette might be nice, but not in place of this).

I suspect one of the reasons they do this nonsense is they don't have the theatrical posters in super high resolution, and marketing people like to have 40,000x40,000 pixel .tiff images that they're just going to squeeze down to the size of a DVD cover anyway.

You would not believe how big some of the stock images we get from Hasbro are.

This one?

Which, if you think about it, may have been the original inspiration for this widely-copied movie poster art, given the positions of Cybertron and Optimus, the latter shooting at the former, and all the in-motion goings-on happening in the background both in the sky and on the ground:

Though, on second glance, it kind of looks like Cybertron has come to attack the Earth and Optimus is fighting back against it.

Almost like Cybertron is jealous of all the time Optimus spends on Earth instead of home.
