Transformers the Movie 40th Anniversary Tour

For your ilk it's just flat out impossible to not be cynical, isn't it?

The show should absolutely get a remaster. There's ton of issues with what's being distributed now, from pre-final takes littering season 1, to sloppy colour correction that need to be rectified. YOU may not like the show, but lot's of people do and it's goddamn tiresome to see it being used as a punching bag by likes of you.
And, today's word of the day is... "Facetious"!

Let's use it in a sentence:

"Undead Scottsman was being facetious."

In other words, it is possible for someone to playfully poke fun at and critique something they like.

The phrase "warts and all" also comes to mind.

[Sarcasm]Okay, why are they just apologizing about Optimus (who should have stayed dead imo) and not for all the other fan favorites they slaughtered. What about Windcharger and Wheeljack, or Prowl, or all the others that died offscreen, or all those poor insecticon clones?! Where's the apology for them?![/Sarcasm]

Sorry, I couldn't resist anymore. I'm hoping to see the Movie in September, but I'm not sure yet if my local theater is going to have it.

So... about them minimizing Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime, or even just the main movie cast in general...

Here's a better look for you:

I'd say we're off to a bad start.

Yes, I know he's in the corner down there. I've had to literally point him out to people who know Transformers well enough to identify him like he's Waldotron (Wallitron for those of you outside of North America) or something.

Figueroa also makes a good point. But even outside of that (and the minimization), it's just painfully generic and boring. At this point it's just a handful of key Evergreen names and a Unicron because remember him, and oh, sure, add the girl and that guy.

And what the hell is up with Unicron's ring

Has Don Fig ever even seen this movie? The Autobots spend, like, half the entire movie running away from fights:
  • They flee to safe and secure locations to better defend Autobot City when it's initially attacked by the Decepticons, rather than foolishly confronting the enemy head on.
  • They retreat from Autobot City aboard shuttles when the Decepticons attack the city a second time.
  • They fake their deaths to escape from Galvatron and go hide on the Planet of Junk.
  • They run away as Galvatron finds them on Junk, with Ultra Magnus the only one left to cover their retreat before he pays the price.
  • They initially run away from the Junkions before having no choice but to fight back against them.
  • They run away from all of Unicron's internal defenses.
  • They flee from the big explosions happening inside Unicron after Rodimus opened the Matrix, driving out of Unicron's eye.
Tactical retreats are a thing, Don. A very smart thing when it's do-or-die.

Not every fight must be a Furmanistic "fight and die" scenario. Sometimes "living with the knowledge that you ran" means living to fight another day.

It's disingenuous to frame it as if Don ever intended that specifically.

Tactical retreats are one thing, but I mean... we all remember that iconic scene, no?

Optimus Prime steps off the platform, his sensors registering explosions and radiation in the near distance. His voice is solemn as he takes in the destruction the Decepticons have wrought on their adopted planet, knowing his foe will not stop at leveling Autobot City.

"Megatron must be stopped... no matter the cost."

The Autobots disembarking from the shuttle feel a strange mix of concern and pride as their leader wordlessly changes into truck mode. Hound later recalls this moment feeling as if it were in slow motion, his hypersensitive optics capturing Prime preparing to enter the fray. He has the touch. He has the power. Yeah.

It is then that Optimus Prime -- leader, warrior, mentor, hero -- drives the hell away from the battle.

I mean, Unicron is right there, coming down to smash into the ground like he's the Moon of Termina, along with Megatron providing heavy suppressive fire and Starscream, Thundercracker and Shockwave presumably following suit. The best thing Optimus can do in the heat of that moment is get as far away from the danger as possible so that he can have a moment's reprieve to actually retaliate, or even defend himself, in some way.

Like, he certainly won't be pulling any Matrix out of his chest, let alone opening it, with all that cannon-fire blazing so closely in his direction.

If anything, it seems like Optimus Prime is leading a charge AT us and Megatron (clearly not firing anywhere Prime is or was) is giving him cover fire. Seekers provide air support while Shockwave falls prey to Rob Liefeld Smoke eating his foot.

(Hot Rod notably took the battle TO Unicron -- still an immense unknowable threat -- in the Movie, armed only with the knowledge that the Matrix would do... something, in a foolhardy heroic charge, just like his dad Optimus. The latter's sacrifice is iconic for a reason. A siege on Autobot City by the Decepticons, who have a head start, AND a Devastator who easily clowns the Autobots' heaviest hitters, would seem to also call for a tactical retreat. And yes, not calling for that tactical retreat contributed to Optimus Prime getting killed because of Hot Rod amirite. But while falling back to protect others and regroup for a more likely strategic victory is no less a heroic act for its avoidance of conflict at the moment, it's still fair to expect heroes to rise to the occasion.)

I mean, are they even running FROM Unicron? Unicron isn't even facing them. He's drunkenly drifting amid a bunch of explosions but he might even just float past the horizon while his outer ring is having a stroke. He's like a Jeff Lee Johnson painting, more weirdness shows up the more you look.

(apologies for the edits, my post was also like a Jeff Lee Johnson painting)

There's also some speculation that it's AI, but I don't know how much stock I put into that. "It's AI" is the lazy go to anytime there's something people don't like these days.

Anyway they should have just used the theatrical poster. Would have cost them nothing.

I don’t get the criticism of it tbh. It’s not great or anything but it’s not as if movie posters, comic covers or video game boxart don’t frequently have random inaccurate crap happening on them just to make them more eye catching.

Well the unspoken thing here is that Optimus Prime is more recognizable than Hot Rod or Rodimus Prime so...

Edit- this was also twenty years ago (G-d I'm old)

But that one also had the lenticular thingy that switched from the old cast to the new cast? Like, Rodimus literally takes Optimus' place in that image.

The one I had, had the Optimus cover as the slip over the DVD case and the Rodimus cover under it and the plastic wrap. So it was just Optimus as far as advertising itself on the shelf went.

Also, I remember the "wtf, they replaced Rodimus with Optimus" discussions regarding this cover way back in 2006, so nothing here is new.

At the end of the day, they know anyone who cares is probably buying this thing anyway. They put Optimus on the cover because he's going to sell it to casuals who remember Transformers and vaguely remember liking it and recognize seeing Optimus Prime as he triggers an impulse purchase.

Yeah, I remember it was initially hard to find the lenticular-specific version of that DVD, as most stores just had the normal Optimus cover version. I specifically held off on getting that DVD until I finally found the lenticular cover version... only to find out that it wasn't actually the DVD case's real cover and was instead just a lenticular art print placed in front of the DVD case in the plastic wrapping.

Nothing a little scotch tape to hold it to the DVD case couldn't fix, tho.

In truth, it's-- wait, here we go:
It’s not great or anything

There.

Those can be called out in their own time.😂 In this case, this seemed relevant to the thread and to the discussion about minimizing Hot Rod in favor of Optimus Prime.

As the discourse has drifted to, it's pretty clear that this is because Optimus is Optimus, and will be slapped on the cover of anything they want to goose sales for, except maybe Botbots oh right. That much, fans are aware of, but sighs of resignation aren't necessarily out of place. The inevitable isn't always palatable.

That said, Arcee seems off to me. Being an open air coupe and all, while this looks to very much have a roof.

Also, seen it said that Megatron was lifted from the poster of the MTMTE theatrical showing a couple of years ago:

Wait a sec. Optimus is mirror-flipped from that poster and given extra shading and sheens.
